This topic came up as I was talking to my cluster head. She asked if I had started peer editing yet. I was honest and told her I hadn't. I guess I probably should have asked her HOW exactly to go about doing this. I started it this week and it's been a nightmare. I basically had the kids choose a story from their writing journals that they wanted a table buddy to read. They read the story and responded with "I like..., I wonder..." (exactly what they do when they orally respond to each other's writing). After that I had them go through and check for CUPS (Capital letters, if they Understand the words/sentences/story, Punctuation, and Spacing). I just feel like it hasn't really been going that well, but it might also be because the whole concept is very new to them. Is there a better way to go about doing this?
I usually start in small groups, showing my strong writers how to peer edit. And then slowly work my way down to the rest of the kids in small groups...I find that it is easier to manage for me
Find a skill that each student does well. And then have them peer edit for just that skill. Much more modeling before you have them really peer edit.
