Just got my feedback form via e-mail.

    Hi Teachersk,
Phase I – VI submissions look fantastic! You really have a nice understanding of all of the important details of the PECS protocol. Attached is the updated Implementer Certification Checklist. Congratulations on finishing this portion of the certification process!

    YAYYYYYYYY

Now, the two hour written exam and I will be done!!!

    Good job!

You can tell I've spent too much time on Facebook this summer because I was looking for the 'like" button :)

Haha, the like button. I'd hit it on my own post if it existed on here!!

Teach- I think they e-mail the test to you and you complete it and send it back, but I am not sure. I guess I'll find out! It's either that or it is online... we'll see on Friday.

Zoom - there appears to be both training for PECS and certification for PECS. I was confused too as I was thinking I just had to sit and get for a couple of days ;).

I just went to the 2 day workshop and they gave me a certificate LOL I don't know if it counts for anything. I got a really good book from it so i can refer to it as needed. I didn't know there was anything more to it.

OK... there seems to be some confusion here... lol.

Just to clarify.... there is a difference between getting PECS Implementer Certified and attending a PECS Basic Workshop.

The PECS Basic Workshop is the 2-day 16-hr training where they teach you about the basics of the phases and implementation of PECS.

The PECS Implementer Certification is sending videos of the following:

    *Video Chapter PECS Phase
    1 Phase I - Communicative Partner
    2 Phase I - Physical Prompter
3 Phase II - Communicative Partner
4 Phase II - Physical Prompter
5-6 Phase IIIA - Powerful reinforcer vs. distracter; Error correction
7-8 Phase IIIB - Correspondence Checks; Error correction
9 Phase IIIB - Learner discriminating between an array of five pictures
10 PECS being used within a functional activity at Phase I, II or III
General Release Forms for learners and staff in videos (if applicable)
11-12 Phase IV - Demonstrate teaching construction, and exchange, of the sentence and pointing to pictures on the Sentence Strip™
13-15 One attribute lesson with correspondence checks and error correction
16 Phase V - Answering “What do you want?”
17-18 Phase VI - Teaching commenting, including fading the commenting question and error correction for choosing between Sentence Starters™
19 PECS being used within a functional activity at Phase IV, V or VI, or Attributes.
General Release Forms for learners and staff in videos (if applicable)

Completing the following data sheets matching the videos:
1 One (1) sample PECS lesson plan: choose Phases I-III
2 One (1) data sheet corresponding to a section of the submitted video
3 Description of entire PECS implementation for one learner.
Note: This may be submitted with Part 1 or Part 2
4 One (1) sample PECS lesson plan: choose from Phases IV-VI.
5 Two (2) data sheets corresponding to sections of the submitted video.
    Written Exam (2 hours)

And having to meet the requirements for each of those videos, here's an example of one set of requirements for one certain video:

Ensures that each learner has own communication book
    • Arranges training environment appropriately – pictures available one at a time, trainers positioned appropriately, in control of reinforcers
    • Entices appropriately
    • Gradually increases distance between learner and communicative partner
    • Teaches learner to cross room to reach communicative partner
    • Teaches learner to get book or to carry book to communicative partner
    • Eliminates subtle trainer prompts (e.g. body orientation, eye contact, expectant look)
    • Does not insist on speech

If a single item in the criteria list isn't met (PERFECTLY), they send the video back and you have to resubmit.

I basically spent my whole summer doing this - and am so excited it is done. The videos themselves took probably 20-25 hours to capture (having an autism class doesn't make things easier! lol)... but then there was editing, resubmitting, data sheets, case history, etc.

Just wanted to clarify.... and let you know I'm not bragging about attending a training. Ha. :p

LOL No, I thought I missed something like OH NO did I forget to take the test??? Did your school require this? Did you have to pay for it? Maybe the speech therapists at my school have done this I've never heard of it. It sounds like more work than both my summer classes put together. If I actually ever had the whole summer off I might consider it though.

Well, there are two levels. Implementer and Supervisor.

My school will pay for supervisor but not implementer. You have toget implementer first, ha.

So, alas, I paid for it.

School did not require it- I sought it out- I love PECS!

How did you find out about this? Did you contact the Pyramid people directly or did your school do it for you?

When I was at the training (which my district sent 12 people to on my request!!!) they mentioned the certification. Since I put such anyone emphasis on communication in my classroom and have several challenging non-verbal students... I really wanted to go for the certification-- because I knew I'd end up very knowledgeable in PECS. I have always loved PECS... and now I feel completely confident at implementing all six phases, data collection and analysis, trouble shooting, and thinking outside the box.

It was a ton (ton!!!!) of work, but I enjoy learning things like this and think it's very worth it!!

    SO GREAT!!!!!

It's fun to be able to share it here, because nobody else knows what it is. Lol.

:) Thanks for the support. :thanks:

Also, if anyone has any issues/problems with implementing PECS... I'd be glad to take a stab.

    :)
