I'm so excited:D. I did the GKT couple days ago and passed. The English Language section was fairly easy, Math was ok (I sucked at Math), I was surprised that I passed it. I think I was over prepared for the Math. The Reading section was a disaster!!! The passages were long and hard to comprehend, you get 40 mins to complete this section, there are 40 questions, therefore, 1 min each. I spent 5 mins trying to understand 1 passage, I had to rushed through most of the passages in order to complete the exam. I thought I failed the reading, when I was about to cry, the proctor gave me a thump up. I almost lost self control, I wanted to scream. What I used to prepare for the exam? Cliffs; the main text, it is just like the exam except for the reading. The reading is more challenging on the exam. I used REAs, all sections are challenging, however, the english is nothing like the actual exam. You can use the english for grammar refresher. I also used CLAST practice paper. The CLAST is somewhat like the FTCE GKT, in addition, used Barrons Math, it's a basic math book which is easy to understand. How long did I study for? Almost two months! Well, I hope this helps anyone that will be taking this exam. Good luck.;) Oh..I used practice papers that I found on subjectareatestprep.pds-hrd.wikispaces

Usually in long reading selections, the best thing to do is spend a good amount of time road mapping the passage so you know where everything can be found. This way if you get to a question you don't know the answer to, you know where to find it.

Yeah, at one point I stopped reading the passage and just focussed on the questions, then skim through the passage (since I was running out of time).

    New_teach 2012,

Congratulations. I was also elated when I got out of the testing room and found out that I had passed the Math, Reading and English sections. I almost cried. Passing the GKT was a requirement for me to become a sub. The reading section really "sucks". 40 questions/40 minutes, enough to make someone have a panic attack.

Thank you! You have to pass the GKT to become a sub? That's crazy. All I had to do was attend a one week training session. Are you planning to become a teacher?

I've failed the Reading FTCE 3 times :( and at this point I'm very depressed. I have the Cliffnotes FTCE 2011 edition but the exam is different from what is covered in that book. I've been depressed after taking the exam for the third time and not passing. I'd really appreciate if someone can share study material / notes / advice for passing the reading and also the Math section. The only exams I've passed were the Essay and Language Arts.

    FTCE

I will be taking the reading for the 3rd myself. I share your feelings but I will take it as many times as possible to pass it. I only failed by a few points. I realize I cant spend time reading the whole entire passage. I'm going to order the book that was stated in the article above for more study practice. The math section is actually easier than the reading because its straight forward and you have plenty of time.

The way I studied for math is to get a math book at barnes and nobles. Make sure the book starts with basic math thru geometry to algebra. Its easy to forget basic math because we don't use it a lot. Do all of the math and geometry sections and you should be fine. Order the FTCE math flashcards and they will reinforce some of the math concepts. Hope this helps!

    Hi New_Teach2012!
I went to Barnes and Noble to look up that math book. Is there any way you could give me the ISBN # of that Barrons book? There are a bevy of choices and I really don't know which one you were referring to. I set up my appointment for this december so I want to start preparing for the math section since that is truly my Kryptonite!

    Thanks ,

apf80, try the math videos on Khan Academy: Google it, and it should show up.

Can someone help me on Passing the Reading section!! I passed all the other sections but during the test I timed out. I did not receive my results yet but I know I need lots of assistance. My fear is I take the test again and still can not get through it. I prepared for the reading section and still failed. I was waiting on my results so I can do a Test review of the material I answered wrong but in the meantime I need to study something close to the GKT.

    ANYONE PLEASE!!! ;-(

Hugs, eeb1. Any good book that helps with reading comprehension skills should serve you well. I like Reading Comprehension Success in 20 Minutes a Day, which is published by LearningExpress, but there are certainly other options.

The new FTCE GK test is changing on May 2014, but meanwhile not one test prep guide company is offering a change to their book.
The reading section is way to short when it comes to time and with the changes being twice as many as before , it will make it even more difficult. Has anyone heard if the state will expand the time on the reading section?

Teacher tests aren't required by districts: they're required by the state in order to obtain a teaching license.

The poster claimed she had to take and pass the test to gain a substitute teacher position. I was wondering which school district required her to take it.

Most states require that prospective substitute teachers pass the state's basic-skills teacher test. It's possible that Florida does things differently, but I don't think it's likely.

I know the district(fla) in which I was a substitute teacher, they did not require it and that is why I was asking the poster .

    Board of Exams

 There is a survey at the end of the exam which serves no purpose. I would like to know how to get in contact with the board of exams for the FTCE. My concern deals with the Reading portion of the exam. There are many flaws that require some attention (eg. many previous exam takers mentioning "skipping" passages due to time issues) and obviously nobody is doing anything about it. I've taken the test for the fourth time and failed again but results from my studies indicate an entire different message. I've studied three long months and clearly succeeded on the practice exams. This multi-million dollar enterprise (Pearson VUE;(£515 million (2012) eqv.701 million USD) profits $$ from every retake administered. It boggles my mind... I am taking action and will be writing to Tallahassee. I am sharing my scores from the practice exams i have used which I would complete at the end of every two weeks. Feel free to have a look: (remove spacing from link) h t t p : / / w w w . m u l t i u r l . c o m / l / i I f

    Kailey,
I have brought this up before and have been shot down on the idea of giving more time. You can contact the state's certification department and they will give you the department that overseas the test, but good luck. I am going to try reading exercises and maybe a tutor if necessary. Good Luck!

Hi, Just wanted to know if you have re-taken the reading and if you have passed it yet. I have the same problem. I've taken it 3 times and I am so worried about taking it again. It cost so much and I'm not sure if i will pass it on 4th try. If you have passed it what did you do differently than than the first couple of times. I'm searching for a tutor but don't know where to look. That's how I stumbled with this website.
    Thanks

    Redrose,
I have not taken it yet. I am going to wait until I pass the other exams then study for it again. I believe the main problem has to do with the computer. If you tested on a paper version( they had it a couple of years ago) you are able to write on the paper. I would check out your college and see if they know of a program or tutor that can assist you, but remember that you should be taking practice tests on a computer to have the same experience as the actual test. Good luck!

Redrose I'm in the same situation.... failed the reading 4 times and can't seem to understand what am I doing wrong. My offical score for my recent attempt is 190. I just don't know what to do anymore. My school doesn't let me take the remaining courses for my degree unless the exams are completed. The only classes I have left are the reading courses and I'm unable to register for them because of the ftce reading exam. It should be reversed where one takes the course before examination... just my .02 cents to the Florida board of education.

I'm looking for a tutor in my area(Jacksonville). I'm afraid of taking it a 4th time. I got the same score 190 both times and I think I must be making the same mistake. If you find any new ways of studying let me know. I found a website call TeachRite but I don't know if it's worth paying the fee. Have you heard about it?

    Redrose,
Teachrite does not deal with the reading portion of the FTCE. I believe the lady told me they deal more with the praxis. I hope you realize the test will change in may of this year. If you graduated from a college that has a school of education, then you should be able to speak with an advisor . The schools usually have prep centers. The school districts should also have advice for you.
    Good luck

update: I have finally passed the FTCE GKT Reading section. What I did different to prepare myself was that I looked up the each section/competency skill up. Example what is Tone, sentence relationship, etc. I also, practice a lot of the College Entrance exams available on the college websites. I also used HH Publishing Co. $40 for the year and it gives you 4 sample test.
What also helpsd was that I got the same questions of the sample FTCE practice test on the actual Exam. So I had time to do read the other passages.
    Hope this helps.
    Good luck guys.

I think that is great! You are lucky that you took the test before May as they will be adding different types of other than tone etc. I found out that FAU in Boca Raton offers a weekend course for 6 weekends for about 180.00. The practice tests are given on the computer.

    General Knowledge Test - Reading

I took the reading test for the second time in June and I passed it. The test didn't look much different then the original test. All questions had 4 choices and there were also two pictures that I had to match with a title.

Well, I can unofficially say I passed my Florida Teacher Certification Examination: General Knowledge Test. The reason I am saying that is because I am not comprehending the "UNOFFICIAL" score meaning as it defined by the FLDOE. I got all of my scores with the exception of my Essay score. Which I have faith that I did very well on. When I look at my "Unofficial Score Documents" for English Language Skills, Reading and Mathematics all of them state "PASS" and of course the Essay states "Receipt of Completion". But what this post is ultimately leading to is are the Unofficial Scores; unofficial because I received the documentation or does it mean the results can change later.:confused::confused::confused::whistle: :dizzy:

Unofficial passing scores don't subsequently tend to get changed to not-passing scores. You're still awaiting the essay writing scores, and good writers may find the results dismaying because the point of the basic-skills test essay is not artistic writing but structured and clear writing.

    Keep us posted, please.

    My Unofficial Scores

I will keep you posted there has been a heavy score delay. So you probably won't hear anything from me regarding my examination 4-5 weeks from now and most likely on a Tuesday night after 10 PM or a Wednesday. When they post my official results, So I will do so.....This wait only makes me more nervous. But I am pretty sure my essay was structured and clear enough in regards to the topic. I didn't go into write artistically per say, I gave what the topic ask for and examples. In addition to taking a side; which that was a suggestion in the study guide. I'll have to see do the two scorers agree. I have confidence they are going to agree though. :haha:

What is the reason for "Unofficial Scores" ?

So I am really trying to figure out what is the purpose behind the unofficial score reports? Are the unofficial just for my records? Because I really have no idea of the purpose they serve me and my university doesn't really accept them, they just acknowledge the fact that I have taken and PASSED the test. Until they officially receive my scores and can officially enroll me in the School of Education.:help::help::help::help:

In your case, it's that not all of your scores are in yet, but at least you're reassured that you did all right on the multiple choice part. It helps reduce the timeframe in which people are hideously antsy.

Which post are you referring too? The one I've recently written or the one beforehand. I am still a little antsy. Because I need to this to be accepted in the School of Education, well, I need the official scores and seeing "Unavailable" on my website makes me more shaky lol. :dizzy:
