Ok, here goes. I am currently working as a .5 teacher and commute an hour and a half to get to work. I am under contract and must give 60 days notice. I have been offered a full-time teaching position near my house. They are very eager for me to start. Is there any way to negotiate out of my part-time contract? If I can recommend a replacement, will they release me? Lastly, is it 60 calendar days or school days?

Anyone who can give any advice, please post!!!

I would ask your district if you could break your contract without giving the 60-day notice, but give them a reason like you cannot afford to continue making the long commute as you originally thought. Also, tell them how it has become a hardship as you are only working part-time and having to spend a good portion of your salary on gas since you commute 1.5 hours both ways. Why don’t you try that?

I would be honest. Our principal would most likely understand. They'd likely be able to work out a plan with them. Definitely don't burn any bridges though.

I would just be very honest. I always appreciate and value honesty. They might just let you out of your contact much earlier than the 60 days.

I would be honest. Most principals would understand leaving for a full time job, especially one closer to home.

When you applied for positions, did you put that you were under contract? Dont schools not like interviewing contracted teachers?
Good job on getting the position!

Here, leaving a part time position for a full time one would be supported and would never be an issue.

Thanks for your feedback. Pommom, I don’t find that is the case if a district really wants to have you as a teacher. I had prior teaching experience in the district that is hiring me. It looks very reasonable to them why I would want to do this. Even so, I’m still being held. The district where I am at seems to have trouble keeping teachers. They are doing interviews soon, so I am hopeful for something less than 60 days.
