One of my students went to Brazil in December (her mom is from there) so we agreed on doing distance learning until she returned (she just returned about 2 weeks ago). This proved to be a lot of work for me. I had to come up with alternative assignments in some cases, find videos that would supplement in-class lectures, post assignments, etc. Anyway, we recently had parent/teacher conferences and the mom gave me a big hug and said she did her best as the teacher but it was so hard, and she appreciated all my hard work. She even brought me a coffee cup from Brazil (the kids know I love coffee and coffee cups are my favorite gifts) and she said I was the only one she brought a gift back for. It was very sweet, and felt great for a parent to see and experience first-hand what we do as teachers, and to appreciate it. I just wanted to share that. :)

    Lovely.

In my district, students are dis enrolled if they have a planned absence of ten days or more. Attendance rates are counted in funding formulas, so it's an issue.

It is really nice when unexpectedly someone appreciates what you do. Last week a grandma sent in a beautiful chocolate mud cake for myself and the teacher aide which had been iced with, "Thank you Mrs ... and Mrs ...". I have never had this happen before and wanted to 'show and share' with the other staff. I have to admit that I did take a photo of it before we cut into it.

Parent appreciation is one of the best parts of the job! It's a confirmation that you're doing a fantastic job.

Yesterday another student brought me another coffee cup she and her family bought for me when they went out of town for the weekend. So, two coffee cups since last Friday. I thought that was so sweet!
