We were supposed to go on a field trip in December that ended up having to be cancelled. :( I wanted to do a parent activity that day because I know my chaperones had planned to take the day off already to spend it with their kiddos. Other grades do Gingerbread houses-so we can't do that. But I'm looking for an art/craft/snack-making activity like that, one that might be a little challenging for the kids to do independently and we can invite the parents in that morning to participate with them.

    Anyone have any ideas?

What about the gingerbread man? Then have them 'bake' and then go on a scavenger hunt around school for them. We do that at our school and usually we just make 1 large class gingerbread man but with parent help, you could make individual ones.

Some years I have my students dip pretzel rods in melted chocolate (keep it in a crockpot) and then roll in a variety of coatings- sprinkles, coconut, chopped nuts, peppermint pieces.

Also, Michael's and Joanne Fabrics have wooden picture frame ornaments students can paint, and put a pic of them in it.

I have also made candles, but not appropriate for K's.

You could also make buckeyes! (Today is the OSU-Michigan game!):D

Exactly what I was going to suggest! I did that in 1st grade and it was SO fun. I plan to do it in 5th, too. :)
