    Hi,

My friend asked me if I could help her write a resume for a paraprofessional position. The problem is she has owned and operated her own licenced day care center for past 20 years but outside of that does not have any relevant work experience. She has earned her associate degree. Any advice on how I can help her with writing this resume? Thanks.

Have her start with a rough draft, then you step in.

It's incredibly hard to pull together someone else's experience. You're bound to miss some of the important highlights.

Does she have any volunteer experience? I used my background as a girl scout leader and a church camp manager and then some subbing on my resume. Any pertinent hobbies? Have her dig up every little detail she can think of--I even used my extensive travel experience.

Honestly, the fact that she's worked with kids for 20 years--kids of any age--probably means she can be trusted with them, which is enough, as long as she meets the educational requirements, which it sounds like she has. The fact that she owned and operated a business means she can be trusted to crunch numbers, which isn't even a requirement for a parapro usually anyway. It also means that she's at least semi-responsible. I think you just need to help her format it and then proofread it for her.
