Back in the late 1800’s, Owney was the most famous dog in the U.S.A. It all started when he wandered into a post office and became their mascot. He soon learned to travel on the trains with the mail. He wound up traveling all over the world.

Read all about the story of Owney: https://postalmuseum.si.edu/exhibit...ilway-mail-service/all-about-owney/index.html

In 1996, a teacher in California read the story of Owney to her class. They decided to send a stuffed animal, as Owney, to classrooms in every state. The object was for students to learn all about Owney and all about different areas in the USA. Mr. DiFiore’s class was one of the original participants.

This year, Mr. DiFiore is starting it again! Students just love receiving Owney in the mail and receiving postcards (electronic or paper) from all over the USA. If you would like your class to participate (or if you know a teacher that might like to), please reply!

I don't have a classroom for your project, but just want to say that I think this is great news that the project is starting again. I'm going to bump this a little to remind teachers that this is available, and the kids really do love it.

When I taught younger ones, I used to join the group for Flat Stanley and it was fun. It sounds very similar. I am a teacher w/ no class. lol or I'd consider it. :)

    vickilyn,

I'm not quite sure what you mean by your question. We are about to begin sending Owney to classrooms. Unfortunately, I could only get four classrooms so far to participate, but maybe more will sign up. I have posted this in a number of teacher portals and FB pages.

You answered my question beautifully. I believe in that project, and when I can bump a thread that is in danger of not being seen anymore, but one that is worth a look, I ask for an update. It isn't in my wheelhouse at the present time, but I love the story and have, in the past, shared it with classes. Let me wish you all the best.

The more you learn and know about Owney, the more fascinating and delightful his story becomes. He is a part of our history, and deserves mention, at the very least. To be able to incorporate his tale into the curriculum is an honor.
