Wow, I can't believe I made it through the first week at my new school! (You might remember my job hunting saga - I ended up with multiple offers and went with the urban school instead of the wealthy suburban schools that extended offers to me.) I was preparing myself for the worst - but things could not have gone more smoothly. Even without A/C in the room, every student created a painting on the first day of art class. We had Open House on Thursday and I had the most visitors! I work in a diverse neighborhood. Around 90% are ESL and Title One. My students speak 26 different languages, many of them speak Arabic and Bengali. The best moment was when a mother from Yemen came into my classroom and removed the veil covering her face to smile at me and shake my hand. There is no doubt I made the right decision. My students are AWESOME, the staff is incredibly welcoming, and we're going to have a great year.
