We just had an emergency faculty meeting where the principal told us that she needs to get rid of 5 teachers this week.

    I'm nervous because I teach a specialized elective. :(

Cassie, I hope that you're not in that number. Are the school's numbers that low.

How horrible! And kind of mean that the principal is keeping everyone waiting. It would have been more humane just to tell the 5 teachers tomorrow.
    Good luck!

I am soooo sorry! I hate it when principals increase the stress by telling part of the story and then making people wait. Don't they have to give everyone 45 days notice or can't you bump less senior people at other district schools? Your school must have had a huge drop in enrollment?

Wow, what awful news. I can't believe that you P. came to this realization so early into the school year, just after everything got started. How is it even possible to make that change? Where will all the kids go?

Cassie - I am so sorry your principal choose to inform the entire faculty this way. I think it is very wrong to cause such worry and stress for everyone. Thinking of you and your entire faculty this morning - hoping you hear good news

Thank you all for your kind words of support. :)

I was waiting to post until I was home from school and all the dust had cleared to give you an update. I was not laid off. I am very happy for myself and at the same time obviously sad for those who weren't so lucky.

I don't know if my name/subject were ever on the table. No one ever indicated that it might be, but I've seen Latin programs get axed in the first rounds of budget cuts elsewhere. That's where my worries and fears came from. :(

The only thing that allowed me to sleep last night was the fact that I am TESL-certified. I figured that if they bumped me from Latin, I would at least be able to move into one of the ELL classes currently held by a long-term sub.

At least one of the teaching positions that was eliminated was really a bunch of prep-buyouts--classes were dissolved, but no actual teachers in those departments lost their jobs. Several of the people laid off were long-term subs whose classes were then dissolved. One smallish program was eliminated completely.

I would like to take a minute to address some of your concerns. For starters, while my principal needed to decide which teachers would be laid of, it was not her decision to lay off teachers. In fact I know she has been fighting vehemently to retain all the teachers she has, plus gain a few. I hate to see her blamed for this stuff when I know she was working so hard to prevent it.

The order to eliminate teaching positions came from the office of the superintendent as a result of a decrease in student enrollment. Our school only lost 5 positions....Some schools lost 9 or 10. I can't even imagine.... :(

They made these changes to faculty numbers based on student enrollment. The district hires teachers based on projected student enrollment. Our actual student enrollment (at our school site) was about 100 students less than what had been projected. (The entire district was down about 5,000 students.) When the 'official' numbers came in on Count Day last week, the district had to get rid of 'extra' teachers in schools with lower-than-expected enrollment. Does that make sense?

Anyway, that's the story. The lesson here is: Have more than one certification! I'm not going to wait another second before adding on the English certification that I've been meaning to get for the past two years. I want to give them every possible reason and opportunity to keep me around!

Great to hear that you were okay! I'm sorry to hear about the other teachers, though...I completely agree about having another certification. Next summer I'm going to try to take some courses towards getting my English cert, too. I think I'll need to take at least 4 courses, maybe more. The good thing for me is that, when I get it, my supervisor is also the English supervisor, so I'd definately have an "in" if I needed to go that route. In addition, they were debating between dropping Latin or German a few years back at my school...many parents complained about the possibility of dropping Latin, so German got the axe.

I'm so happy for you, yet, sad for the others. Our district does the same kind of thing. Our numbers came in high this year so our school was able to catch 4 teachers from other schools who were riffed.

I cannot agree with you more about multiple certifications! I am qualified to teach in both the English program as well as the French Immersion program here. Two years ago, I took a mat leave in the French Immersion dept of a school. At the end of the year, they wanted to keep me so badly, they moved me into an English classroom. Well, the high school around the corner heard there was a French Immersion teacher teaching english (me), and they snapped me up.

I'm glad everything worked out for you :)

I'm glad that your position is safe, Cassie. I can only begin to imagine what a worry it was.

We work much the same way. Our staffing numbers from the school board are based on enrollment--1 staff member for each x number of students; the number of specialty teachers (Special Ed, ESL, library, etc.) is based on needs as a percentage of total student population. Several years ago, our actual enrollment at the beginning of school was about 30 students fewer than our projections, due to delays in construction of new homes, and one of our teachers needed to be transferred to another school. (Unfortunately, when the houses were completed and new families moved in our enrollment went up by about 50 students--and we didn't receive additional staff.)
