We aren't much milk drinkers; but I decided that when I purchase milk it's going to be organic milk. We've been buying organic for about 6 months and it stays really "fresh" much much longer than non-organic milk. Why is that?
Maybe it's a conspiracy to make people by milk more often by the big companies. I only drink soy milk so I haven't noticed that. Keep drinking the organic.
? you know how milk has an expiration date...well; with the regular milk it lasts just a few days over the exp/sell by date...no problem; but this organic milk lasts about 2 weeks over; Like I said; we're not milk drinkers so the milk will stay in the fridge a good while. It does taste good still.
I'm guessing the "extras" that are put in regular milk make it go bad faster? I have no idea...whenever I buy milk I never use it up..now I'm thinking of switching to organic
I buy the organic milk too, my family says better taste. And I noticed it last longer too. Maybe it does sit around a long time before it gets to the stores?
I'm not sure why or how the longevity of the shelf/fridge life; but I was sold onto organic after reading this in many magazines and watching tv programs on eating healthy: (NOTE: Horizon Organic is just one of the Organic brands) Horizon Organic® products not only nurture our planet by encouraging organic farm expansion, they also nourish our bodies because they are produced without the use of antibiotics, added growth hormones or dangerous pesticides. does it taste the same? I take forever to "drink" milk- i only use it for cooking or in cereal But i am a freak about milk- as soon as the date comes the milk gets thrown out ! I dont even like to drink it on the sell by date
I am vegan so I only drink soy milk or rice milk, but if I were to drink milk again, I would also only stick to organic. In fact, before I stopped drinking milk (health reason), I think I did do organic. It was so long ago though. Here's an article I found that explains why organic lasts longer: http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=experts-organic-milk-lasts-longer
Same here; that's why I was surprised that it still tasted great! The milk was in the back of the fridge and we needed milk for our cereal. This is how I do a milk taste test...I stand over the sink and stick out my finger...I let drops of milk hit my finger and then I taste it! I told you, I don't like milk! hehe...but I figure organic is the way to go versus regular milk. hey, every little bit helps...now if I can just lay off the McRibs!
Very interesting Peachy! Thanks for the link! here is Peachy's link and part of the article: http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=experts-organic-milk-lasts-longer If you’ve ever shopped for milk, you’ve no doubt noticed what our questioner has: While regular milk expires within about a week or sooner, organic milk lasts much longer—as long as a month. So what is it about organic milk that makes it stay fresh so long? Actually, it turns out that it has nothing to do with the milk being organic. All "organic" means is that the farm the milk comes from does not use antibiotics to fight infections in cows or hormones to stimulate more milk production. Organic milk lasts longer because producers use a different process to preserve it. According to the Northeast Organic Dairy Producers Alliance, the milk needs to stay fresh longer because organic products often have to travel farther to reach store shelves since it is not produced throughout the country.
:lol: i just smell the milk and if it even smells a little sour it goes down the drain -- but i am wierd about milk so if the date isnt colse to being up I try not to smell it because I hate the smell in general so I would prb pitch it too early my roommates hate this becuase they all will drink it past the date ;; yuck!
I have family members (brother and his son) who are dairy farmers and I grew up on the family farm. I want you all to know that NO farmer (organic or otherwise) can sell milk to the handlers if there is any milk tainted by antibiotics. Now, any mother who has breastfead an infant and had an infection (mastitis) knows that it's painful and you need antibiotics for the health of the mother. A farmer is a business man and he knows that if he's treated one teat on an udder with antibiotic, the milk from that quadrant CANNOT go in with the rest of the tank. It gets thrown away! If a farmer sends tainted milk, he doesn't get paid. That's a rule that you obviously don't ignore. But also, each cow is an important commodity and if she's not healthy, she needs medicine. Just my FYI. Proud to be drinking just regular old milk and lots of it!(
So they are adding preservatives to the organic milk to make it last longer? hmmm... Plus if it is being shipped that far across the country, it's not very "green." I'll stick with my good old local milk.
