Open House

Talk to me about Open House. What do you do? I want it to be "student directed". I don't really want to get up and give a presentation. Especially when i find that parents seem to come and go. I THOUGHT about doing the Pete the Cat scavenger hunt that day and then modifying it slightly for Open House to let the kids show the parents around. I do have an information sheet I would like for them to fill out. So I was thinking something like they could do the whole scavenger hunt then the last clue is to return to me so i can meet them, and give the parents the info sheet to fill out a little prize for the kids. (Haha what if I found Mickey pens/pencils - my room is Disney themed and the parents use the pen to fill out the info sheet and the kids get to keep the pen?)

Ideas welcomed!

Our Open House is before school starts. It's come and go, so I introduce myself to students and parents, get their transportation information, hand out beginning of the year forms, and answer questions.

Same here agdamity.

During Open House parents are in an out since its prior to the start of the school year. The students learn where they sit, I greet students, answer questions, get parents to fill out transportation information, emergency contact information, ensure they have our supply list. Although this year I'm at a new school so I'm not as sure if things are really different or generally the same. I also took family photos so I could post them in the classroom at the beginning of the year to help students transition into the classroom and as a keepsake for end of the year keepsakes.

I greet my students (they're usually pretty scared!) and let them pick a locker (it seems to make them feel a little more comfortable) and then have some coloring pages and blocks out to keep them busy while their parents fill out all of the appropriate forms and ask any questions that they may have.

I've put together a list of instructions and they put their own supplies away and get their pencil box ready with their parents. It's great because I don't have to deal with getting everything put away or get their boxes ready. It also familiarizes them with the classroom. I love doing it and so do the kids!

Thanks Little317. I try to take tons of pics throughout the year. Some years I have made end of the year collages and laminated them for them to keep and write a nice note on the back for them.
