As I keep mentioning, I'm facing some health issues. I found out on Monday night that I'll need radiation. As a result, I was in a foul mood and begged off our school Christmas party.

I dropped a note to the principal (since I had already RSVP'd) and let him know that I wasn't coming, and why.

Today I ran into him. He was, as always, incredibly kind, asking about my health, and reminding me that my health came first.

Then he said: "From what I understand, radiation isn't so bad. In fact, Ann had it."

me: "Ann P??" who had breast cancer about 10 years ago.

    him: "No, Ann M."

OOPS. Ann M DIED of cancer last year.

It was one of those moments when I could just see-- he wanted to grab those words back as soon as he uttered them. But there was nothing I could say to help.. so he just went on and mentioned another member still on the faculty who also had radiation.

My heart went out to him... he was trying so desperately to make me feel better (and he knows that I even cry at denture commercials, so that's always a minefield with me.)

    But it WAS funny!

And not only a man, but a member of a religious community. I don't think he's comfortable with the whole "crying as a release" thing.

My principal said the exact same thing regarding my health issue. She was talking about a little girl (who I knew died) and you could just see the moment she figured it out. Awkward for everyone.

I am sorry you have to go through radiation. Even if it "isn't the bad" it is one more thing that I am sure you don't want to do.

I know he must have felt awkward, bless your heart too. He was lucky you didn't break down and start crying.

I'm so sorry you're having to do radiation. I must have missed you posting that here.

I'm sorry you are going though this, but it's great that you're able to laugh. What an awkward moment for you both. The memory of that conversation will probably make him cringe for years.

I will bet he is awake late tonight feeling bad. :(

My DH and I are in the ministry, so we have dealt with a lot of crisis situations. People trying to comfort will invariably say the wrong thing - it is the reason so many ignore a crisis or don't go visit someone in need. "What will I say?" The truth is, there is nothing he could have said - I've learned you just have to focus on the intent - to comfort - rather than the outcome - being stupid and probably causing more distress!!!

Alice - I too marvel at your sense of humor! We are here for you - do you want to let us know when you are doing the radiation? And God bless you for being so gracious to your P!!

    Thanks guys.

The good news is that it's preventative. The margin between the tumor and chest wall would ideally be 2 cm; mine was 2 mm. So they're concerned that the tumor may have spread, though nothing is showing up.

Also, the type of tumor I had is pretty rare; my oncologist has only seen it 3 times before. He checked with "two of the top guys in the country." So I'm fairly confident that this is the right thing to do.

I go for the "simulation" (ie: computer workup before the actual treatment, so they know where things are) on, of all days, Christmas Eve. From there they'll let me know the next step. But it will be 28 consecutive weekdays-- figure almost 6 weeks.

The radiation oncologist said that, of the 20 new patients he'll see this month, 19 will wish they were in my shoes. So that helps too.

I spoke to my next door neighbor today-- her mastectomy was a month before mine, and she had radiation 2 years ago. She agreed with the oncologist: the worst of it is the fatigue. Hey, I'm a mom. I'm used to fatigue!

Trust me, it's taken all week to get to where I can laugh. I spent Monday and part of Tuesday in tears, and skipped out on Wednesday's Christmas Party. I haven't slept all that much this week.

And my principal is a wonderful man. He and the AP, along with the members of my faculty, have been nothing but kind and caring from the moment all this started.

    Thanks again guys.

I really didn't mean for this to turn into a pity party; I just found it kind of funny. (Isn't that called "whistling past the gaveyard"??)

Normally I'm the one with my foot in my mouth.

Well, he was trying .... in an inept, male, religious kind of way.

Everyone seems to react differently to radiation, but I haven't known anyone who had a terrible time with their first round. Knowing you, you'll take it in stride. I'll keep you in my prayers.

Men say the strangest things sometimes, like the time my husband looked down at a new baby in it's proud mother's arms and ALL he said was, "Sure is RED!"
