You are a new poster. If you decide to stick around, you'll have more freedoms as you continue to participate. There are already a couple of threads started by people interested in your program, so you might want to look for those.

Great question! Once you apply, you set up your interview and go through a process that can take 1-2 weeks depending on how quickly you complete all of the training and mock classes you teach. If you want to start later in June you could either apply at the beginning of June or apply now and get your contract started, and then not open up any bookings until you are available. There is no longer a minimum on how many days you must teach! Let me know if you have any other questions! I love VIPKID!

This sounds like a wonderful opportunity! About how many hours does it take most applicants to complete the interviewing and demo class process?

Thank you for the information, Nancy. I know of some fully credentialed teachers who are currently substituting and this VIPKID sounds like a teaching setting that they might really enjoy. I'll give them this information. Although I'm currently a classroom teacher, I also think that there's a good chance that I would like to try my hand in online teaching in the near future.

During the application process, does the potential VIPKID teacher need to use Skype?

A lot of full time teachers are applying now for some summer income and the hours actually work really well with teaching full time. They are early morning 4-8 am Mountain Time every day, and also 7pm-4 am the following day on Friday and Saturday!

You will use the VIPKID classroom for the interview demo class and Mock classes. You will teach several classes through the training! They make sure teachers are well prepared for the classroom! Let me know if you have any other questions!

P.S. Your friends will love VIPKID. I was subbing as well because I was home with my little, and then found VIPKID, and I love it!

Thank you again, Nancy! So far, what I'm hearing is that teachers' computer requirements (e.g., internet speed, browser) are passing all of the equipment requirements except for the microphone requirement. The teachers are receiving a message stating that their microphone isn't working. I tried to get their microphone to work and although it worked on other programs, it isn't working on the VIP Kids classroom portal. The teachers also tried using a headset and again, everything except for the microphone works. Do you know of anyone who has had this issue? Do you know of possible solutions? Thanks again!

Yes! I have had this issue. I had to update my flash player and use Chrome web browser. I also messaged the headphones in the classroom (IT) and they sent me a new link for the classroom which worked. I have also gone into settings on my computer and clicked on "sound" to find what the sound was connected to. It should have the headphones that you are using listed. Another thing to check is in the classroom there is a "Settings" tab on the bottom right of your video picture that you click on and click on "Microphone" you can adjust the volume and you will be able to hear what is being picked up! Hope this helps!!! Best way to learn is to go through these little hiccups:)

Thank you, Nancy! If any of the substitute teachers I know get accepted to VIPKID, then I'll tell each of them to make sure that they give you the referral credit in case if the company would give you recognition for recruiting new teachers.

You're welcome, Nancy! I definitely would love to apply next year if there are still openings. So far, one friend who is currently a substitute teacher (and holds a teaching credential in history and a school counseling credential) applied to VIPKID but unfortunately didn't pass the interview. She was told that she would be eligible to reapply in another 3 months and really wants to apply again.

Hi, all! I'm in the process of applying to teach with VIPKID and was happy to find this thread. I'm hoping I can get a question answered... or really, just get your thoughts on the matter. Open to input from anyone who cares to read this!

I'm early in the process. I submitted my basic information yesterday and have just started preparing for my interview. At first, I was really excited and wanted to book my interview for a couple of days from now to get the ball rolling. Now, after watching a couple of YouTube videos and reading a bit, my enthusiasm is dampened by the feeling that I need to do a ton more to practice and shopping to prepare for this interview than I initially thought. For example, one video I watched (Nancy, it may have been yours!) showed a nice wall behind the teacher with two world maps. Another girl's video had a white board, reward system, and cute decorations behind her. Some teachers have headsets and hand puppets. The camera on my desktop computer, where I'll have the best connection, faces into our guest room, so the wall isn't even within reach if that makes sense. Even if it was, I don't have these things to display or use. Are they expected or helpful for the interview stage? Thank you!

I'm glad that you got an interview with VIPKID. I am interested in applying to VIPKID in the near future as well. I have a friend who interviewed for the job a few weeks ago but unfortunately received a rejection e-mail. Based on what I'm hearing about what VIPKID seems to looking for in a candidate, the factors such as props and backgrounds don't seem to matter that much. It seems that what they're really looking for is how well you can follow the provided lesson plan and communicate with children who do not know any English. VIPKID also seems to emphasize total physical response (TPR).

I hope that you get a job with VIPKID. Good luck!

Hi all- just like Nancy has said, this company is super fun to work for. They're in the midst of changing some things from all the info that's already out there, so here's a recent update on it, if any of you regular school-year teachers are looking for extra summer $$ (like some of my schoolteacher friends):

-they're in the process of changing some things, so they are updating their phone app to make it easier to schedule bookings, switching up their teaching levels so teachers can apply to teach other levels other than what they test for initially, and adding things like summer programming and english language test prep lessons that you can apply to teach.
-They seem to have a pretty high standard--not gonna lie, I had to apply twice. Their interview process is like a 3 or 4-step deal, and I just barely missed the last step. But they now provide you feedback either way, so you can take it into account if you do apply again.

    and then basics, as mentioned:
-NO LESSON PLANNING! I teach in-home mostly now, but when I was classroom teaching the lesson planning was the worst (especially since my special learners were often different levels grouped together, and you never know which way you're gonna need to accommodate last minute).
----with that said, there is plenty of lesson PREP you'll need to do. because you ARE teaching young kids via a screen that they can just up and walk away from if they want lol, so props and laminates, and silly costumes are a must to keep them engaged.
-work as much or as little as you want (granted, bookings can vary no matter how awesome you are, just because they have so many options and their own school schedule and whatnot)
-FEEDBACK from them is QUICK. Any question, concern, etc that I've had I have always heard back within 24 hours. Also, they pay a crap ton of attention to their online teacher forums when teachers bring up issues or suggestions about ways to make something more efficient or anything.
-The meeting platform they use (zoom meetings? anyone? it was new to me) is super easy to use, and me and some girls who we all started together meet regularly to practice, share ideas, clip arts, info about the company and workshops, etc. So its also a fun little social network you build, haha :)

So if you're interested, and reallllly feel like you're missing your laminator if you haven't taken on summer teaching, let me know!
My (Victoria Demery) referral code is: 038E5S

Let me know, and I'll gladly help you prep, create some zoom meetings to practice! Whatever you'd like. It really is super fun, and a ridiculously easy way to earn some extra money if you're already used to just throwing on your Teacher Voice at a moment's notice anyhow, hehe.

@vdemery, thank you for your reply! I've been delaying scheduling my interview and I feel like the longer I wait the more anxious I'm getting... and I'm sure THAT'S not what they are looking for! It's encouraging to hear that you had to go through the process twice but are teaching successfully now!

Call me the devils advocate, but I find VIPKIDS a hard sell. It seems to be newbies here advocating it and I've seen elsewhere. Something about it leaves me questioning. Make sure you research before signing on.

I'm sure that is good advice... I'm trying to do my due diligence. I'm hoping it'll be a good opportunity for me to work very part-time.

The pay seems awfully low for all the antics the teacher is required to perform to keep the attention of students.

I looked into this company. As far as the pay goes, I think that depends on what a tutor would normally make in your area. Around here, it's around $30 per hour, so when you factor in the fact that you don't have to drive to different kids' houses or prepare the lessons yourself, that makes up for the $10 discrepancy IMO. In my area there also isn't really a demand for elementary tutoring...I'd love to make some extra money, but it's all SAT/ACT prep and high school math that people are looking for.

I was pretty sold on applying until I realized that they expect you to buy props (not reimbursed) for the lessons- things like stuffed animals, toys, etc. to act as visuals. If you have younger kids at home, it's possible you'd already have a lot of that stuff around your house anyway, so it might still be worth it. I personally don't have any toys or anything like that around, so by the time you factor in buying all of those props, the pay definitely isn't worth it. You are also expected to buy a headset, props for your demo lesson, and have a "cute teaching background" (for the wall behind you while you Skype) before they even hire you!

And it's all taxable. And you need to be available China hours. Add in the costs you mention? No thanks.

I was anti-vipkid before, but I've started to get interested in it because I'm getting burnt out at my current job and I'm thinking of just taking on two part-time teaching jobs instead of one full-time (some of the private preschools in this area only want part-time teachers who work 3 full days a week or 5 half days a week, etc)
I don't make much at my current job anyway!
My fiance is looking into selling on Amazon on top of his well paying job so it made me look into making money online as well :p

Consider you are possibly giving up pension and healthcare benefits.
I could never make enough money teaching Chinese at $20 per hour taxable and selling stuff online to even come close to my salary. But good luck to those who find this good as income!

That's true, but I could go on my future husband's health insurance. One of his coworkers makes $2k-$3k per month just selling on Amazon, which puts him at over $100k per year with his fulltime job.
And look at this guy, he pulls in $75k per year from vipkid:

I'm not 100% sold yet, but I have been doing my research on it!

Well I certainly don't make anywhere near $100k. Good for you if you make more than that. I barely make 1/3 of that.

Hello you all, I work for VIPKID and Cambly. They are not online ESL jobs that would be substantial for Full time. They are very unstable. I work part time

So far it is going well. However, I do not trust the job as full time. I know of this one teacher that was solely depending on VIPKID for income and was cut due to having to be admitted to the ER. There also teachers that teach soon after giving birth because they fear a contract termination. Now that public school is in, I work only on the weekends. I will never quit public school for VIPKID or Cambly. they are jobs that are ideal for supplementary income. I was living paycheck to paycheck until I started working part time from home. VIPKID pays every month, and Cambly pays every week
