classemom, thank you for posting this. I would like to go back for my Masters. I'm just not sure what I want to major in. Counseling has been at the top of the list for awhile though.

Thank you for posting this! I plan to get my masters starting next summer and really want to get it in school counseling! I have had a lot of trouble finding schools that are close enough to work and work with my schedule!

You're both very welcome! Someone else at my school recommended it to me. Only 1 university near me (still 1 hour away!) offers it, and then the hours are so horrible, I'd never get anything done. I've taken three classes at UWA so far, and they weren't bad at all. The worst was research--I spent lots and lots of time on that one.

I've been interested in the online counseling program at the Univ of West Alabama as well. However, they have two online graduate programs in School Counseling...one for teachers and one for those w/out teaching experience. I am the latter and can't figure out if it would meet the requirements to be hired as a school counselor with this degree. I have called both the school and my states education office (Virginia) and can't see to figure it out! Has anyone looked into these programs? I have subsitute taught and am now starting a position as an assistant to the Reading Specialists, but I am not a certified teacher.

Tuition isn't too bad, but it did just go up last quarter. I took the fall off, so I'm not 100% sure of the cost right now.

The program I'm in requires two years of teaching experience before you can graduate. Kathyrain, I'm not sure of the answer either. Sorry!

Wow! Glad to hear you are taking those classes...I was wondering how that would work though as far as certifications since I am in Texas and not Alabama, any thoughts?

classemom, I'm in TX too so I would like to know the answer to this. What part of TX are you in?
And I heard that it was 3 years experience before you could become a school counselor?

I'm in North TX outside of Ft. Worth. I grew up south of Ft. Worth so haven't moved too far away. My sister in law grew up in a little bitty town in the Panhandle.

This is a Canadian one. I've been looking into for last year or so (not for the school counseling though). I've spoken to a few graduates and they loved the various programs and the Dean of the program is wicked. When I originally was thinking of the applying he took me out to lunch and helped me figure out everything I would need to do to get accepted.

I don't live in Alabama either, but my state has reciprocal certification with them. I will have to take the Praxis for school counseling and have a passing score for my state, not Alabama. You will need to check with your state's reciprocal agreement.
