Hi There - I taught as a CSUN Intern in LAUSD for a year, Secondary English. I do not recommend going about obtaining a credential that way! I left after a year on account of large classes, 3 grades, 4 subjects, no support and a good job offer elsewhere. I really miss teaching though and I would like to complete my credential somewhere other then CSUN. I am curious if anyone can recommend a solid online program, or evening program that accepts prior experience/ credentials and is reputable, offering a clear CA Secondary Cred. Thank you!!!
Well I sure hope CSUN's 3-yr distance learning speech pathology grad program is better than the program you're in because I plan to start that in 2010. I attended Cal Poly Pomona for my Bachelors in Behavioral Science, my multiple subjects and mild/moderate credentials, and my Masters in Ed specializing in Special Ed.
Wow, I'm sorry you had a bad experience - I went through the CSUN Intern program to get my credential, and I thought it was great. A lot has to do with the school you're in - mine was very supportive (not in the LAUSD.) Why don't you just go back to CSUN and go through the Traditional program?
I am going to have to second that.. I'm sorry you had a bad experience in an intern program. But I wouldn't trade my intern program in San Diego for anything in the world.. its a million times better then going through a normal program.. and I have a class, of 3, from hell.
my undergrad is berkeley, phd ucsd - i thought csun was disorganized, long and not helpful. I know they have a good psych dep't but the education did not work for me personally - i'm sure it is a good experience for many - i work full time now and I am looking specifically for a program online - obviously not for teaching hours but for most classes - i can not find one that meets ca standards and credentialing, really would *love* assistance on this hunt! thank you!
and yes i have heard very good things about san diego's intern program. however, I am english secondary (despite the lack of caps and they seek science /math / primary for the most part. thank you!
There's a fellow sub in my district who earned her teaching credential online through National University. One of the student teachers was completing her credential through CalState Teach via Cal State Fullerton.
sorry.. I wasn't running it in your nose or anything.. I hope I didn't come across that way. I was just suggesting that you not give up because of a bad experience in a program.. there are other good ones out there.
Again, sorry you had a bad experience, but I must completely disagree about CSUN being disorganized. I have had incredible professors and I'm nearly done with my MA in Secondary English from there. Frankly, I don't think an online credential class is sufficient preparation for teaching, but that's just my opinion.
Once again, I really am not trying to debate on the quality of education of CSUN, just stating the fact that it is not my future to continue in that particular program, without judgement. Life has changed and I am hoping someone out there may know of an accredited ONLINE CREDENTIAL PROGRAM FOR ENGLISH SECONDARY?? If someone has the answer to this particular question, I will be so delighted! Thank you.
and I have taught for several years, which is the only reason I would consider getting the classwork done online. I am really not interested in justifying my experience or interest to Mrs K, just finding a program that someone else may recommend. thanks.

I see. Like yourself, I find class time indispensable. However, I would encourage students NOT to utilize CSUN's Intern program. LAUSD has other Intern options, if an LA resident would like to Intern, and San Diego has an excellent Intern program. For those that can afford the time and cost of a Traditional program, I highly recommend looking into another program. Other CSU's have good response, Channel Islands, Fullerton, etc. You also can't beat the private 1 yr programs and there is no substitute for the UC's. Northridge is time consuming, and in my personal experience, incredibly disorganized. I embrace genuine creativity and diversity and I found it both stodgy and unhelpful and frankly - I highly recommend going elsewhere. Enjoy your holiday.
I think it is great you enjoy it. However, out of my group of friends, 6 of us have taught, 3 attended CSUN - and all of us were very frustrated compared to our peers. I really would like to sideline this discussion if you would like to continue it. I had a bad experience there - or I wouldn't be on here looking to complete my credential online !!! If you enjoy it - GOOD! I did not. Simple difference in experience. I am not looking to vent about CSUN, although I do seem to be going there - because I was so disappointed by the lack of interesting classwork and support for real (and not hypothetical) situations - I am on here merely find an effective and time appropriate substitute to their program. I taught private prior to public and am experienced - I am just looking for the paperwork. It is up to people to choose what works for them, all we can do is state our experiences. The only issue with San Diegos is you must be secondary Science or Math to be considered. Good news is.. there are unlimited openings
To clarify, I "enjoyed" the program. I've had my credential for several years, I teach in a highly-regarded school, and I feel that I was well-prepared by CSUN. However, to each his own.
