Do any of you have the 4th/5th graders etc come to your classroom for anything? If so ... what types of things do they do?

A fifth grader comes in our classroom once a week to do a read aloud. We also use fifth graders to help with lunch duty and recess duty. They aren't responsible of course but they do help!

I had a few who would come on their recess. I would have them mail homework, staple things, trace things or even walk around and help if we were doing something.

I have had them come into my classroom first thing in the morning and do table toys with the K kids. My class loved playing the games we have with older children, especially when they had to teach the 5th grader how to play the game! They also read to them in the library corner during this time. It was only about 10 - 15 minutes - until everyone came and we started circle time.

In the past I did have 5th graders come in first thing in the morning to help. They would help and play with the kids in free choice centers. I would use this time to go through folders and do lunch count. They would also help me with tasks like sharpening pencils, tearing our work book pages or changing name tags.

I do miss them. We are now a pre-k through 3rd grade building, so I no longer have them.

If I do get any "helpers", I usually have them file things, rip out workbook pages, make little books, etc. I very rarely have them work with the kids unless it is during centers or something very structured.

A 4th grade teacher and I have been getting both classes together for a mini read-a-thon. The older kids read books to the younger ones. This week, we brought our decodable books and "read" to them. My kindergartener's thought they were so cool reading to the older kids!

I had 5th graders come to my class daily near the end of the day, a different student each day. It was during our math time and I would assign them to supervise a small group of 4-5 students that were playing a math game. This allowed me to focus on the other 3 groups. If we had any special events like a Valentine party etc they would help with that and sometimes I would ask them back after school to sharpen pencils and re-stock the art and writing centers. They also escorted students to the clinic if they were sick and stuffed folders at the end of the day.

We have reading buddies with older grades. They come in once a week, and the kiddos love it!

I have them help teach my kids how to log in to the computer or log them in, clean dusty computer tables, fold and staple books, sit and read to or listen to children read.
