For the fun of it, think back over break. How many students of yours did you end up seeing? (For secondary teachers, you might have to give a guestimate :). Elementary teachers...rack your brain and get an exact number :p)

I saw three - one while shopping (that kid didn't see me - it was actually an opportunity for me to observe momentarily as the home life changed significantly at the beginning of break), one while in the classroom over break (kid playing outside on the playground), and one this evening while walking at the park with my wife. Not many, but our weather over break hasn't been conducive to much outside stuff, and I've been trying to relax as much as possible / get a bunch of planning done!

Zero. Full disclosure: I have hardly left the house except to go to the movies all break. Usually I see 1-2 students per week when I'm out and about.

I live an hour away from my school and have only been in town a couple days during break. So... zero :)

In 6 years, I think I've seen maybe 6 students outside of school.

None. I live 20 miles from school but in a totally different area than my students would go shopping, etc in. I actually like having that distance.

    Ummm . . . I wouldn't even know how to count.

I live in the same small town where I work, so I rarely go out without seeing at least one. I saw two at Walmart in the next town, and I was only there about five minutes.

0, and I like it that way. Last year I lived in a small city and would always see my students out and about. I live 20 miles or so from my school in a place where I would not see mine.

None! I wish I had though. I went out of the country this holiday, but even had I stayed in town I work in a different city than where I live.

I can't wait to see them though! :)

I think I saw 2. I don't usually see any because I live about 25 minutes from my school. But I've seen a few out at the malls. I'm a lot more likely to see some now that I have over 1,000 students. I never saw any when I was in the regular classroom.

I'm amazed at all the 0s! I live 20 minutes away from the school, and still saw 3/25, two of them 10+ minutes away from the school. Some luck, I guess!

I teach high school. I saw zero. Living 45 minutes away from school certainly does have its benefits!

I saw two which is really weird because I live in a pretty small town and usually see 2 just going to Walmart. I saw one at Walmart and one last night at the basketball game and I knew I would see him. I have seen more of my former students this break. Plus I saw a couple of kids that aren't in my class this year. In fact last night at the basketball game this one little boy I sat next to looked up at me and said "Hey I know you, you go to my school!"

Zero. I live about 28 miles away from school, and I don't go anywhere near there for things not work-related.

Zero. I was out of town most of the break.

Even without being out of town though, I don't see many students out. I live a little over 15 miles from my school but it is isn't in an area where most of my students would shop.

None, I live 50 minutes in a whole different county---which incidentally is very rural and therefore none of them would have any reason to be here. I do all my shopping in the town in the opposite direction as well, as it is closer.

But when I worked in my old district, also about 50 minutes away, I actually shopped there after school since I drove through town to get home. I did run into students and teachers on occasion.

That'll never happen in my new district :(

I do too; I live in the suburbs of Baltimore and rarely see students when I go out - which I love.
Me too. I never venture into the city unless its work related.

Zero. I lived in a pretty populated area, and the town I was an LTS is 15-20 minutes away. It is a pretty big town with its own Walmart, Kohls, movie theater, etc.... My town is almost as big with its own shopping as well. Plus I rarely left the house.

None. In my 6 years of teaching I've seen a student outside of school twice in the area where I live, and I think twice when doing an errand close to my school. I live 30 minutes from where I teach.

20 or so. I've been home almost all the time otherwise it would have been higher. Especially due to high shopping days. Most weren't current students though - but we're in the past two years.

Me too! And I saw exactly 0 over the break. I don't count my niece's bff (they been bff for 14 years) so I see her all the time anyway, she's basically my niece.

It's rare for me to not run into students when I go places in town.

I was born and raised here, taught here, and I'm now an administrator at the same site I attended from K-5.

None. Best advice an undergrad professor gave in an education course: "Never live in the community you teach."

Years ago I saw one of my chronic class disruptors/thugs during Christmas break getting handcuffed in a store after being caught for shoplifting. He spotted me as I walked by and it gave me a great deal of satisfaction to smile in his direction as the officer was holding onto him and say, "Merry Christmas, ____!"

    3. 2 at the swapmeet :) and one driving by in a car, yelling my name out lol.
I live in the same community as my students, and I run into them all the time. I actually like it. They never ignore me, they're happy to see me. I think living here actually helped me connect with them, they see me almost as one of them, not some rich teacher lady who lives far, far away in a different world (their perception)

None. I live about thirty minutes away from where I teach, but I often see students when I shop in a town that's halfway between here and there. I don't think I could ever live in the same town I teach in!

I must be doing something wrong

I see mine all the time. I live 20 minutes from where I work, and I still run into at least one a weekend. I've even run into them at the local amusement park, at the county fair, and believe it or not, I've run into them out of town on vacation. I've only been teaching for 13 years, but really, they somehow find me. I saw 4 over break.

One of my former students is now teaching next door to me and is a sub for my special ed teacher. And two others are my favorite subs when I'm out.

I ran into one of my students on vacation a few years ago.
I had only 16 kids in my class.
    We were at Disney World.
    I couldn't believe it!
