I am taking my Middle Grades Ohio Assessment for Educators Social Studies exam on Monday. I have taken it multiple time sand recently have been coming close to passing it. You need a 220/300 to pass this exam and I have gotten scores ranging from 215 to 217. How on earth do I get it higher? It consists of 150 multiple choice questions ranging from 1350 - Present day World history, 1492 - Present day American History, Geography, Government, and Economics. Geography and Government I do pretty well in. It's the other sections that I am concerned about. I am staying positive with this, this time.

I have been using the quick study guides from Amazon that are lamented and guide you through history in a timeline format. I hope this will help.

They should help, yes. Since you're doing well in geography and government, try viewing history through the lens of those subjects. Geography has a huge influence on settlement and migration patterns, and documents like the Magna Carta and the US Constitution reflect the history that brought them about and the concerns of the day.

Could you explain the Magna Carta one? I know there are a few questions around the Magna Carta. I know that with the U.S. Constitution it helped the settlers venture off into the western areas, especially after the Louisiana Purchase.

I could, but you're better off explaining them to me. (*insert here teacherly smile*)

Feel free to scaffold your learning with Wikipedia, and bear in mind that I've suggested a particular connection by way of government.

LOL, okay then. I know the Magna Carta was a document enlisted to the King of England (John I believe) to allow peace between the nobles and himself. Those nobles did not want taxed unfairly by the crown.

I also wanted to state that it started to limit the power of the King thus creating this idea of limited government.

The Magna Carta was the beginning of the end of absolute monarchy and the beginning of constitutional monarchy (those terms are ALWAYS on the Social Studies OGT so there's a chance they may play into this test).

Good point! I feel like I just summed that up with the post above, I just wasn't connecting the terms, but thank you!!!

It's useful to compare the terms of the Magna Carta (Wikipedia's discussion will do for our purposes) with the petitions of the Bill of Rights. Aside from the fact that the Magna Carta operated between King John and the nobles only, whereas the Bill of Rights functions for (pretty much) all, there's a lot of overlap.

VCLA is a different type of exam, Teacher2015: you're likely to find more help on the Basic Skills Tests subforum (and let me add that basic-skills teacher tests are more alike than they are different, with the exception that VCLA doesn't include basic math).

    Welcome to A to Z!

I got a 175 the first time.... so it isn't that bad. I took it several times. The second testing time is never as bad as the first. I'm sure if you brush up on two of the domains that you struggled with on your report, you'll be fine.
