So as a potential new teacher (I'm still going through the nomination and clearing process from HR) in the DOE this year I was sent an email last week about attending a workshop for Danielson. Is anyone else going? I know they had like 6 different options.
I got the email too. I really wanted to go, but will be away all of next week. I wish the dates would have been made available sooner Have a great time if you go!
Aw, I'm going to the Wednesday one in Manhattan. I can share any helpful info I receive there with you afterwards.
I wish I had info about this! I still haven't gotten my email from HR. I saw my classroom Monday and spoke to the principal and its just a budget issue that is taking forever to clear.
Ugh that stinks! You would have the option to attend one day from 8/11-8/14 from 2 locations. My process can go either way, while I feel I have a really great chance to be granted clearance there's always the chance I'll be denied. So yeah, the position is not official for me until everything clears so I know how that feels.
Never got that email. Where can I register? I got an email to register for the new teacher orientation at the UFT office. I'm going on August 27th. Good luck with those nomination clearances!!! I thought they'd be cleared by now.
Thanks, Bunnie. I would appreciate it. I was kinda bummed about not being able to go, but I could not rearrange my trip. MissPapa: I never got the UFT orientation email lol. I wonder how come we are getting some emails and not others? Off topic, but have any of you completed your salary differential application? I did the salary step, which is still being processed, but have not received anything from the DOE regarding differential. I get conflicting answers everytime I call HR Connect.
I have no idea. I guess depends on what your principal sends you. I haven't. When I called HR Connect, they told me I can't do it until September when I'm full-time status. Same with payroll. I'm planning on following up before I start work.
Ok, that's what I thought. I called once and was told that it should be done now and then another time I called, they said not until September.
Miss Papa, I'm going to PM you the link. I thought I'd be cleared by now too but I have extra hoops to go through since I'm a former DOE employee. I'll know in roughly a week or so. New teacher orientation at the UFT office? That's gonna be a tight squeeze no? Sunshine I haven't gotten to that stage yet, but I don't think anything can be done until September.
I completed the salary differential application. I am just waiting on my transcripts that I will attach to the app. I will personally walk everything over to 65 Court. You do have to use Internet Explorer 8 in order for the payroll portal to work properly. They have not updated their systems.
I got the danielson workshop information, but since im a prek, I couldnt do it because it was for K-12 teachers. If anyone of you will attend, I'd love to hear how it went. I am going to the new teacher orientation as well. Btw did any of you start preparing your classrooms yet?
Ok, so it doesn't apply to me either. I haven't really been in my classroom just yet. I will go in for the week before the official teacher report day.
I didn't get to go to my classroom either. I might be going to it a week before my actual work date starts. So I'm going to the workshop in Brooklyn. I hope I find it informative.
I actually just took a look at my gmail, I received it there, not my DOE. And I flat-out ignored it! If it wasn't for you guys, I would've never acknowledge the workshop and decide to register. Thanks guys!!!!
Miss Papa, but seriously what would you do without us! Hahaha Even though I'm not official yet, I'm finally going up to my school tomorrow to get materials and hopefully see my classroom. A little excited about it!
I'm still waiting on that email or call to come to the school to get my curriculum materials. As much as I trust that I'm still getting the job due to finishing the process and getting other emails from my AP…damnit! I want it to happen already!!!
Hi ladies, sorry I am stalking this post, but I still never received my initial email from HR. (So far I have been offered the position by the principal, saw my classroom, and picked up materials. Other than these 3 things, I haven't done/heard anything else). Do you think I should call HR? My principal said it was a budget issue that needed to be cleared up, but it has been almost a month now. She said not to worry or panic, but I am getting nervous that I am missing out on all these workshops. Can anyone recommend what I should do? (The principal is on vacation for the next two weeks and I need to report to a summer institute at my school on August 25 & 26). I am frustrated and worried.
So I went to the workshop today. I found it informative, but a little boring. However that's only because I've been teaching for 7 years so most was common sense. I did like that know I know for sure what they are looking for when they observe us. I do think the workshop is helpful for brand new teachers. I wish I had a workshop like this my first year!
Going tomorrow. I hope it's not going to be boring and help me out so I can be well prepared when having to do my 6 evaluations with the principal! The most I've done was go to a few PDs at an LTS assignment, talking about 1 component of the framework (I was in District 75 at the time teaching kids with autism…I'm going to be doing gen ed kindergarten). Were you enlightened at least?
To some degree yes. It helped that I knew two people at the workshop with me so it wasn't so boring. You can bring a tablet or laptop with you, for entertainment, as there was free wi-fi at least at the Manhattan location.
Thanks for the info! I'm going to a school. Guess it's time to fire up that iPad I barely use (my wifi in my room sucks! Surprisingly my laptop is holding up.
Cool. Let me know what you think tomorrow! And in my apt it's the opposite. My iPad is great with the wifi. My laptop? It selectively connects when it wants too. Lol
Just got back from the PD and an expensive haul at the teacher supply store (I'm hand-making the rest of my stuff >_<) I loved it. It was very informal and I felt that it really prepared me well. Did a lot of group work with the table I was at and with others not at my table! Those 6 hours (okay, 7) went by quick, was never bored for a second. And they provided breakfast and lunch, plus a few breaks as well (did Manhattan do that too?) Definitely save your documents, they can be put in your tenure portfolio. Oh, and there wasn't any free wifi >=[
Yeah very laid back. My boredom extends from not being able to sit for long periods of time. My attention span is very small. Lol Yeah we had breaks and such. Did they say what could go in our tenure portfolio? There was no mention of it at my workshop. Sorry there wasn't wifi.
No, but I learned from my co-teacher at my LTS job (who was like a mentor to me) that she put all her PDs in her portfolio for tenure. Anything that involves progress from both the teacher and students is good for the tenure portfolio. And it counts towards your 175 PD hours.
Ahhhh yes. You know you can't accumulate the 175 hrs until AFTER July 1st of when you were issued your Professional Cert NOT while you still have your initial. They don't tell you these things.
Wait…like, do my PDs count but I can't cash in my 175 hours, or they don't count at all when I take them during my initial? I was told I have to take all these PDs during my first year. Da hell? Well…I'm excited about starting work…but my wallet is hurting from buying classroom supplies
I mean they'll count for tenure and you'll get paid/per session for them but no they don't count towards the 175 hours. I got both my prof certs this June. In there's an info sheet that comes with it that says this. So if I had gotten my cert after July 1st I'd have to wait a whole year. I also had a friend in the DOE confirm this for me waaaay before I got my certs. Btw I'm just waiting for my confirmation email from the doe to say I'm hired, I passed everything the other day. It's not official until that email sent though! I can't wait to buy my decorations. I have a color scheme in my head already that I want to do.
Did you get any materials from this workshop? Anything you can share? I am so disappointed I couldn't go =\. HR has been no help, it is just a waiting game for me.
Im glad you guys found the workshop useful, im more excited about the new teacher orientation in the next couple weeks or so. Ive only brought a few things for the classroom, and so anxious to get in my room and decorate. Did anyone start lesson planning yet? Im still on the fence what exact curriculum my school will use but Im kinda planning the first day out. I am anxious to start buying to but are you going to get remursed? unless you wait till you file taxes? ahh the time is quickly approaching.. and @nyteach89, you got fingerprinted and everything? to my surprise once my name was in hr, everything went through within a few days. But you should get your notification soon.
Well I was fingerprinted by the state in 2011- do I need to get fingerprinted by the city as well? I have had no contact from anyone in the DOE aside from my principal reassuring me not to worry. Maybe I should try to call again?
There are some online links about danielson they told us to refer to on the DOE website. I'm not sure exactly where though. I'm excited for new teacher orientation. I'm glad it's done by individual school instead of one big event like they used too. Jteach: no lesson planning yet, but I will start after orientation. I'm going to buy supplies to decorate next week. We get teachers choice money $77 I believe but it's reimbursed months from now. Nyteach: your fingerprints should be fine. I would call the HR person at your network. Did you try them yet? Don't call HR CONNECT for that. You'll wait forever and not receive a clear answer.
The principal only gave me her name. Maybe I can try to google stalk for that number. Thank you for all of your help, I really appreciate it. And wow how generous, $77! Haha I guess it is better than nothing!
