I had posters of nursery rhymes which we recited and sang. I read the same verse in a few different versions & we compared. I used sentence strips and covered some of the words. As we recited the verse we would figure out what was covered. I had some picture cards and we matched them with the right words by reciting until we got to that word. I also had some word card that we matched.
Some fairy tales have very different versions. I would read both and compare. Sometimes we changed parts of the stories. We practiced retelling the stories by remembering the characters, setting, some key events in order and the ending.
