I'd love to know what novels you all use in your classes - in particular for your higher readers. I have found that as the reading level increases, sometimes the content gets a little "sticky" for fourth graders. . . know what I mean? I have kids on a reading on middle school levels, but who still have fourth grade minds, hearts, experiences and maturity levels. Excited to hear your thoughts.

check out teacher wizard at www.scholastic.com

I love it. You go to bookalike and type in the title of a book (for example, Magic Tree House). Then you choose 1-3 grade levels higher or lower. Hit submit and it will give you a list of books with similar themes, elements and such but at the different level.

    Oh, good tip, teach_each1!
I had 4 kids reading at HS level this year so I hear you!
I challenged them to read Newbery's. They read The Westing Game, The Giver, Number the Stars, Island of the Blue Dolphins, Phantom Tollbooth, The Twenty-One Balloons.

I look forward to others suggestions.

My "high readers" this year read:
    Chasing Vermeer
    The Wright 3
The books include information about artists, math puzzles, pentominoes, etc. They are great reads. (But difficult.)
I have also used Tales of Despereaux, Surviving the Applewhites.

I never knew that was there--how awesome! I will definitely be using that this coming year, thanks!
