My 8th graders love Dr. B. Sparks books "It Happened to Nancy", "Go Ask Alice". They tend to deal with heavy subjects, so they're not a happy story.

My 7th graders really like Orca Soundings novels (a new novel line that is suppose to encourage reluctant readers with contemporary issues). Some novels on the list are "Sticks and Stones", "Truth", "Zee's Way"...etc etc. (Just google Orca Soundings to learn more).....

ALthough these novels are really good for young adults, some may be too explicit depending on the type of students you have. I work in a gang-affiliated district, so the kids really love them.

I've taught 7th grade for seven years. Some whole-class novels my kids love are The Outsiders, Walk Two Moons, Freak the Mighty, Hoot, & Joey Pigza series.

As for independent novels, they LOVE Uglies, Pretties, Specials, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Harry Potter, Sammy Keyes, Eragon, Ella.

Outsiders, Devil's Arithmetic, The Giver, Stargirl, The Misfits, Four Miles to Pinecone, Freak the Mighty, Call of the Wild

    Just to name a few!

These are all books we use either whole-class or as lit circles

For 7th grade, I recommend The Giver and Homecoming. Although the second is quite lengthy, the main character is around 7th grade age.

In my district, The Hobbit is on the 7th grade reading list. It takes a lot of work on my part, but I do this novel every spring and the kids love it!

Here are some of the novels we have for 7th grade . . .

    The Outsiders--love it
    Walk Two Moons--most like it
    Ruby Holler--really like it
Jim Davis: A High Seas Adventure--boys love it
    Sounder--mixed reviews
    Farewell to Manzanaar--difficult for lots
    Night Swimmers--like it
    The City of Ember--like it
Darn it! I can't think of some of the others. We have at least two new, upper-level books this year as well.

    7th grade novels

Students loved The Giver, Maniac McGee, and The Outsiders.
These books were used for a "TOLERANCE" theme.

I know that the 7th graders at our school read The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, Tom Sawyer, The Watsons Go to Birmingham, and Stargirl.
