Grown men aren't supposed to cry...and I broke that rule this morning. I just received a powerful note from an 8th grade student coming up from a troubled past. The note said that he was so thankful that I encouraged him to give 110% in track and school and that he can't wait to have me next year as a teacher.

I am so glad that this is my prep period- I just got very emotional over this, because this note gave me some much-needed encouragement at the end of a stressful year and completely made ALL of the outside work with this kid completely worth it.

We got a really nice gift for Teacher Appreciation Week yesterday, but this note is the best appreciation gift I ever could have received.

    Wow!

Who says grown men aren't supposed to cry?! Frame that baby, and post it where you can eye it for days where you need a little pick-me-up. This is why we teach!

I have a binder of thank you notes that I've received from students and parents over the year. I flip through it every once in a while when I'm feeling sad. So I understand how powerful the notes can be. Everybody likes to be told thank you every once in a while.

What a wonderful note to receive! Had to laugh at this comment though!

I received a note like that last year and I had a similar reaction. I just thought it was the nicest thing and I was showing it to some other teachers. Then one of them burst my bubble by telling me one of the teachers had all the kids write them in their class.

Oh well, it didn't matter - she said she was exhilarated to come to class and she looked forward to it all day. I don't care if someone told her to write it or not, it was still nice to hear.

Doug, that's tremendous - and, in light of your participation in A to Z, very much deserved.

As to the note the kid had to write, silver... I know a middle school teacher who assigns his eighth graders the task of writing a letter of appreciation to their parents - AND he has the parents write a letter of appreciation to their kids. A mom I know was profoundly grateful for this, and I know the letters both ways helped that mom and her daughter in the process of working through adolescence and all its discontents.

    Congratulations.

It's so nice when kids realize in real time that they've had a wonderful teacher.
