I was wondering if any of you had ideas of non-prize rewards for students (i.e. extra freetime, choosing read-a-loud). Thanks a ton!!

Computer time, choosing their seat, a few extra minutes of recess, playing a game, "lunch bunch" (students get to come in and eat lunch with the teacher- so sweet that the elementary kids think this is such a fun thing haha), having a lesson outside when it's nice out.

Having the eagle nest cam on during work time
Watch 5 minutes of a documentary (this year, my kids were sooo into the eagle cam. I found a documentary online about it, and just kept a running total on the board of what minute we were at. They would be so focused all morning to watch the next 5 minutes!)
    Extra chapter of read aloud
Where's Waldo books at reading time
    Around the World
    Sparkle
Sit in the teacher chair and read to the class
Work on whiteboards instead of paper

I made a couple of business cards at VistaPrint that are special awards:
High Five Award - add 5 points to any assignment or test.
Grace Card - negate one warning
You Rock! - personal message from me

I have a hotel bell that students get to ring if they earn blue cards (above and beyond) or win the classroom bingo. They LOVE ringing the bell!

I also rewarded the whole class for good behavior by teaching them to count in different languages. I taught them to count 1-5 in each language (Japanese, Arabic, French, German, ASL, etc). I would write the language on the board in the morning and if we had no major behavior problems, then at the end of the day I would teach it to them. They loved being able to show off to friends and family.

My students think that Lunch with Teacher is the best reward of all. I would think that even high school students might want time with you.....although it's much different than in second grade!

    High school might be:

    Free homework pass
Extra credit points (if you believe in it, hehe)
    Free computer time
Be able to leave for lunch a min. or two early
Allowing them to co-teach with you/leading the class
Displaying their name on a poster in the room (for example the top ten highest scores on the test get their name on the poster)
