Non-fiction texts (or memoir) that would be great to teach alongside research

    Hi everyone,

My school's current novel list is honestly super drab. I've ordered a few great fiction books over the past two years, but now I'm wanting to look for something non-fiction or memoir that would be great to teach alongside a research unit. Our textbooks are ancient, as well. I used the SAME books when I was in high school (more than ten years ago). For example, I'm going to have my 10th graders read Aquariums of Pyongyang which is the memoir of a North Korean refugee. We are going to read this while doing research on what's currently happening in North Korea. I need texts for my upperclassmen, though.

Any suggestions would be GREAT! Thanks :)

What other kinds of topics are you going to be working on? Non-fiction doesn't really narrow it down :p
Two that come to mind are:
I am Malala -- taught to juniors
Into the Wild -- I teach this text to seniors
Both texts can connect to current events/social issues, etc.

Night, First They Killed My Father, and An Ordinary Man are all about genocides (holocaust, Cambodian, Rwandan).
Into Thin Air is another great Krakauer read.
Warriors Don't Cry is a pretty easy one about the integration of Central HS in Little Rock.

Hehe, true! I don't really have a topic, yet. I do want it to connect to current events, though.

I'm teaching "I am Malala" It's going great, but sadly I have to create all the curriculum.

I'm intrigued by using Into the Wild for my seniors. I read the book about five years ago. Could you share with me a brief rundown of how you teach this? What current events/social issues do you connect this to? Thanks :)
