I normally don't get my class list until 1 week before school starts. I know how you feel. I could do so much more if I had it sooner.

I don't have a class list. Can't get in my classroom yet. School starts the 25th. Thankfully I have done my planning already. I usually can't even think about planning until my room is set up but, apparently when forced I can plan without my room being done.

I wont have my class list until the Friday before school starts, so 3 days ahead of time. Many times I also have students just show up the first day.

I am in the same boat. I have 15 days till school starts. I have no idea what grade I am teaching yet or what my classroom looks like. The building is brand new and doesn't even up to the teachers until the 1st and the kids start the 3rd. Ahhhhh

I did that 2 years ago.......the switch was made the day before school started and I was switched from 5 to K :) It turned out okay....I spent a week shadowing the K teachers and had a little time each of those days to work on my classroom.

Oh and the students know long before we do who they have...at least for homeroom. I was eating lunch with some friends from the elem. school that I was at before I moved up last year and one of them told me that I had a relative of theirs...my responce was "oh good...that's nice...I haven't seen a list yet" and that was less than a week before kids came in. We get a list the day of or the day before meet the teacher night.....and end up with another 2 or 3 before the first day of school....then the whole first week it changes several times. I am middle school though...

We usually don't get a finalized list until about a week before school starts. We go back on Sept. 1st, and I'm pleased to say that we got the "ok" to start setting up our classroom this Thursday. I'm very excited...usually we have to wait another week. As for the class lists, we have an idea of what type of class we will have because we help to create the new class lists at the end of the previous school year. Needless to say, there are usually lots of changes over the summer, though.

I don't know my grade level, have never seen the school, and have been unable to contact the principal. No one answers the phone at the school yet. I can't wait to find out what my classroom looks like, and what grade I will be teaching!

I don't have a grade, room, or class list. All I know is the name of the school I am teaching at. I was told 4th grade, but then they switched principals. How do I plan without knowing what grade I'll be teaching?

We're started and I have to make my own class rosters. I see 1st through 6th and I see different students most every day with some coming twice a week. I'll probably get my rosters finished over the weekend so that next week everything can be changed and I'll have to start over.

Good Luck, I know how tough it can be.

I will get mine tomorrow...so that's 13 days before school starts. But my list will probably change...several on the roster usually move and just as many (if not more) come in their place with in the last few days.

We have to help put together our class lists at the end of each school year so we already know who we have, give or take one or two kids transferring in or out. I was lucky enough that my last class eagerly helped me label mailboxes and library pockets for this new class. I hate labeling those more than anything!

We don't get our lists until 1 or 2 days before school starts.

That's no big deal - last year our school was going through rennovations and we didn't get into our rooms until THE DAY BEFORE school started!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You can imagine my panic. But it all ended up ok, and parents understood why nothing was up on the walls yet. It was hectic for the first few months always trying to "catch up" and "organize" stuff during the year, but it wasn't the end of the world like I thought it was going to be. Somehow I learned to adjust. I hope that doesn't happen to you and you get your list soon! So far this year, I still don't have my list and school starts next week. I'm sure I'll get the list soon.

I'm really lucky--one of the benefits of being in a small school is that with only one class per grade, I pretty much know my class list when school gets out. We'll only have a handful of changes throughout the school.

I get mine the day of open house. They've notified the parents at that point so it seems ridiculous that I can't have mine at least the same day they mail the letter home to parents. We also only get into our rooms five days before school starts (workshop week), no sooner, never mind the meetings we have that week.

Last year we got our lists 10 minutes before Meet Your Teacher started. This year we'll be getting ours the same day as Meet Your Teacher, but hopefully not cut it so close! I hate that, I wish I had time to personalize the room so my students have a chance to look around and see where they'll be sitting, etc.

I'm crossing my fingers that the administration doesn't juggle the class lists too much. The 2nd grade teachers placed the kids really carefully, and last I heard I'll be getting sibling of 2 really great former students. :)

This year, I have a class list... but last year, I didn't have it until perhaps the week before school or so. I was fine with the room setup, not necessarily knowing who was coming in until then.

I'd be freaking out... big-time. :( I'd want to know how many students I had before Meet the Teacher/Open House.

What was funny last year, though, is that I got a new student DURING that time. She was in another class, and the teacher moved her to Advanced. I was fine knowing who all the others were beforehand, though. I also remember hearing that one of my students refused to see me because he thought he was transferring to the gifted school in a week- he was wrong; he stayed the entire year and enjoyed Jasztalville.

My first year teaching 3rd grade, there were many students showing up to Meet Your Teacher who were in my class but had not been put on the list I was given. I remember meeting one student I had just discovered, then turning to chat with his twin sister. I asked her, "So who is your teacher?" and she replied, "You!"

    I felt so unprofessional!

We had enrollment verification tonight for the parents who filled out pre-enrollment forms in April. I had a couple of students decide to go somewhere else or move away and I had some brand new kids enroll today. So, my class list has changed AGAIN. So glad that I hadn't labeled anything yet.

I think I'll go ahead and label everything temporarily this week. We have meet the teacher on Monday. After that, I can start labeling things permanently. (Of course, my list changed up until the third day of school last year, so even then it won't be safe)

We got our list 10 mins. before meet the teacher as well. As my students walked in, I gave them a sticky and they would write their name on it and stick it on the table in the spot they wanted to sit. They would sit where they wanted on the first day. Then, once I got a glance at their behaviors, I could move everyone where I wanted them.

We get our lists a few days before the children begin, but like a few others, several of those don't show up, and we probably add about 7 or 8 more in the first few weeks. Kids just wander in late. I am always anxious to begin labeling things, but know enough to hold off.

I usually get the class list two days before meet the teacher night. Only because we have to mail postcards to the parents. I was going to complain, but that's better than the day before school starts.

I've had my list since the last day of school, but truthfully I haven't even thought much about school until this past week.
You can still get your room going without a class list- unpack supplies, set up centers, get a welcome bulletin board in the works...You'll have your list soon and then you can quickly label the desks, bins, etc. but at least everything else will be done.

I haven't read any of the responses yet, so forgive if I repeat.

Keep your eye on the big picture. Teaching isn't about the cutesy, it's about the teaching. What will you teach this year? How will you present it? THAT'S what the job is all about-- all the other stuff is what we add to the job. Concentrate on what you'll teach and how you'll explain it-- that will save you time and energy during the year when you'll need it most.

I would like to respectfully object to the term "cutesy". The curriculum is, of course, important, but setting up the environment is important as well. It goes a long way towards putting young, possibly nervous or elementary students at ease when they have the opportunity to come in and suss out their new classroom.
