I think she and I are going to go in together and get the first year. The P really doesn't seem sold on it. I think it is cool. Uses boardmaker type pics in the stories and such.

It's amazing and I have used it for years. It's relevant content, comes with differentiated versions and activities, and related worksheets across the curriculum (science, math, all related to the weekly topic). My kids LOVE it because it's very predictable but the content changes frequently. I would 100% recommend it. It's based on grade level content standards and it's research based. There are many documents on their website that you can share with your P if he/she needs sold on the research behind it.

Yes- and Unique actually links up with a lot of the News2You stuff. It's cool. My kids love Unique, too, because they're used to it and its so similar!
I used the free Baseball unit this summer. I liked it but would not spend my own money for it. I hope my school buys a subscription!
and time consuming I like News2You. You also have to think about the time and $$ involved in printing it each week. Money was so short in our district a few years back that we were only alotted 1000 sheets of paper, and I had to buy my own paper, printer and ink. If you print in color, which is more student friendly and necessary, it really adds up!
Also, don't forget technology if you have access to it. I downloaded the newspaper on our classroom iPads (3 iPads for 6 students) and would display it on the SmartBoard. We did many activities as a group, but I really got a rhythm down to what I was printing and using for each kid based on IEP goals. It's a really great resource to have activities that are related to the content (ie if you're learning about a band that just debuted a new album, you have patterns with the band faces, addition with the band faces, coloring, handwriting, vocabulary, punctuation, sentence structure, so much stuff! All related to the theme!) I found the content to (usually) be age appropriate across grade spans, and those lower level skills are really difficult to create appropriate activities for. Also, I used page protectors to let one student do an activity during independent work, which would allow me to reuse it. You can get creative with the printing; if you need to!
As for printing, look for your printer's Economy or Draft mode: for newspaper-style printing, it'll usually suffice, and it uses a fraction of the ink per page.
Yeah, I like "draft" mode. Our computers are set up to print at the copier. Knock on wood, we haven't been limited to numbers of copies. We are lucky.
Well, I am the one who sent you the link but I LOVE N2Y. I just found out about the app and I'm so excited to try it with my kids who have trouble with pencil and paper activities. There are things for every level to do. Starts with copying and tracing letters related to the news story all the way up to making change and proofreading.
