The discipline poems were sent to me. However, they are in a file format that my computer does not recognize.

If You know the teacher who had the students in third grade, talk to her/him, you may get a feel for the students you will be gett next term in fourth grade.

One thing that I have done in the past, and will be using with this next group, is the prize board. I have a poster marked off with a grid (7 X 8 I think) that's laminated. Whenever I see a child doing something good they get to go put their name on the board. When it's full I pull for prizes. (We also get to practice our grid reading!) I pull for 10 prizes that could be pencil, a homework pass, sitting where you want for a day, etc. They don't have to be huge. By doing the grid, it's easy. I used poker chips and wrote all the squares and keep them in a plastic bowl.

I have taught 4th grade for 7 years now and 6th grade (at an elementary level) for 2 years. I use the license system. I print a license every week for every child with their name and the date on the top (with a picture of our class mascot a fish) and then I print Monday - Friday down the center. The notecards are up and down, and I have created a template for them using word. The students all have a library pocket taped to their desks along with their nametag and the license stays in this pocket. For discipline problems I punch a hole in the license. At the end of the week I collect them and if they have gotten less than 2 punches for the week they eat in the classroom on Monday, but I like the idea of being able to bring a snack or drink etc. as well. We also have what we call Fun Friday and if they have received less than 4 punches they get to join an activity on Friday while the others have enrichment work to do. For the most part the students who miss Fun Friday are the ones who need enrichment work!!!

Too funny, Peachyness. I think someone should start a new thread here. Forget about the poems.

Peachyness - Just goes to show that people will click reply without looking at dates or reading all of the posts first.

    But nice try!

    Randy Sprick!

Wow! There are a lot of good ideas out there. I use a discipline plan/approach by Randy Sprick. I went to a conference and bought his book "Champs". It is awesome! The entire school where I used to work adopted it. Basically it's based on the premise of consistent consequences, motivational systems, and clear expectations. I'm sure you can look him up online. I taught fourth grade for three years in a really difficult area and this worked great! Let me know if you want more info.:)

CHAMPS is being used in my school and district wide. It's best asset is that it helps you set up CLEAR expectations and really think through your procedures and planning. I would highly recommend it.

    Discipline Poems

Here is Volume 2 of the Discipline Poems. As soon as I track down the others I will post them. I know that when Mr. Wright originally offered to send these, they were being used in several Texas School Districts. That was a few years ago. So, is anyone currently teaching in Texas?

    ~ Misty

Discipline Poems , Volume II , Brian Wright

    Talking in the Hall

You were talking in the hall
Or you were talking to a wall
We all must pay for our crimes
So please write this poem 50 times

    Leaning Back in Your Chair

Please don't lean back in your chair
Or from me you'll receive a glare
When you fall, you are defenseless
That hard floor will knock you senseless

    Fred Sanford Club (Messy desk)

We have this club to honor Fred
His junkyard has long been dead
That old red truck may be gone
But your desk carries his tradition on

    Playing in Class

One should never play in class
If one really wants to pass
The point is made, it should be clear
    Otherwise, come back next year

    Out of Your Seat

No one said to leave your seat
So sit a spell, get off your feet
No one here called for a clown
Park it now, or get tied down

    Tapping on Your Desk

Tap, tap, tap, I hear a sound
And now the culprit has been found
The punishment will be a bummer
Keep your day job, your no dumber

    Throwing Objects

I've seen better arms on a chair
About the rules you must not care
No one should behave this way
There are laws you must obey

    Out of Line

Out of line, in more ways than one
What happens now will not be fun
Things will change, there is no doubt
So shape it up, or ship it out

    Cheating

Shame on you, why did you cheat?
Perhaps this grade you should repeat
A cheater never goes to far
And all will know just who you are

    Foul Language

One should never curse in class
    Words can hurt, offend, harass
Now you're on a slippery slope
Where Mr. Mouth meets Mr. Soap

here are 2 more to add to the collection:

    shuffeling feet

    Was that a squeeky seat?
Or the shuffeling of your feet?
Freeze and hush, feet on the floor,
or cleaning the boards will be your chore.

    hands on

    hey! Don't push and shove,
that behavior, I'm sick and tired of.
Think with your heart, not your might,
    disrespect is just not right.

May I have the poems too?

    Mr. Wright,
I don't know if you're still offering those poems I've just read about, but if you are, may I please take a look at them too?

    Thanks for your help!
