Hello! I just found out that I am being moved from 5th grade (taught that for 10 years and it's the only grade I have taught) to 3rd grade. I am excited about the change. I would love tips, ideas, or advice for what to do, how to get ready, and what to expect. Thanks so much.

I moved from 5th to 3rd two years ago. I LOVE it! They are still very independent, but sweet and enthusiastic. There were several things that surprised me, though:
--They needed to be taught how to use notebook paper
--Indenting paragraphs is a difficult concept for many
--Turning pages in a packet can be confusing for them!

If I think of more, I'll add them!

I've taught 3rd for 6 years and I love it!

The kids come in very primary and end being more 'social' and independent.

They still like things like morning meeting, show and tell, etc. However, they love things that promote independence - such as classroom jobs, being a helper, etc.

For 3rd, I would recommend starting to talk about things like bullying behaviors, friendship skills, etc.

As far as academics - I think the most important thing in math would be multiplication. In reading it is the fluency. Writing would be paragraphs and complete sentences.

I probably spent the most time on place value! They really struggle to comprehend the base 10 system and how it dictates so many mathematics skills. Word problems are a big deal in 3rd grade, too.
For reading, I focused more on comprehension than anything, because of our state test.
3rd grade is so awesome! I just love the kids at this age... the are mature enough to follow most instructions, but still have respect for you (for the most part, lol!). Enjoy 3rd grade!!!

I highly highly recommend Beth Newmingham's website. Google her. She is AMAZING!! Also http://tcherheart.tripod.com/readers_mini_lessons.html has some wonderful mini lessons for reading! Her ideas are so fun yet easy to implement!!!
