I am really excited! I recently took a position at an amazing school and I will be teaching 2nd grade. I have been teaching kindergarten for the past 2 years and prior to that I taught a k/1, 1, then a 1/2. I was really ready to make the switch to another grade besides k.

I was wondering what things you consider to be essential in a 2nd grade classroom. Games, activities, charts? Anything that a 2nd grader is going to think is cool.

I would also love any 1st day of school ideas that you can share with me.

This is a link to the Second Grade Teachers Club. It is another wonderful resource that is focused ALL on second grade. When I taught second it was a God send as well as A to Z! I know this isn't the answer you are looking for but you might find them here!!!

I'd check with the other teachers on your grade level team for specifics they are used to doing as a grade. My team, for instance, always has a second grade performance which is each class performing in either a play, songs with movement, or readers theater. We also have specific health topics with community involvement. Our grade also does landforms including making salt dough volcanoes which 'smoke' with the help of a straw built into the sides. As for my room specifically, I end up coming up with fun names to describe activities or days such as: Readapalooza(an afternoon of reading, reading, and more reading), Wacky Wednesday because we had 2 specialists that caused our wacky schedule where we have 3 20-25 minute blocks total in the afternoon, Thrilling Thursday when we'd have Buddy Time with our 4/5 buddy class, Flip-Flop Friday when we'd flip-flop our curriculum instruction so math was in the morning, etc. My kids loved these! Good Luck!

I'll focus on the All About Me theme for the first week of school as well as reading books.

    First Day Jitters
How I Spent My Summer Vacation
Things I Learned in Second Grade

All of these books have a writing activity that I ask my students to complete. It helps me see where we're starting from.

We also read a book called The Crayon Box That Talked which is really an adorable book about how everyone is different but when we work together we make a beautiful picture. The kids then wrote one thing that make them special on a template of a crayon. It made an adorable bulletin board and was a fun and meaningful way to kick off the year.

You are going to love second grade. This is really the year that reading goes from "learning to read" to "reading to learn." I'd say really emphasize the reading comprehension strategies with lots of think alouds...what do good readers do? I also use a LOT of manipulatives in math, and make sure they're writing about at least one subject every day. Second grade rocks!

I have to agree with Lysander, second grade is the best! You will really see your kids grow up over the year. By April/May you will be asking where the time went and you will wonder when that change took place in your students. Just know that you play an important part in that role and enjoy every minute of it! :)

I always read First Day Jitters on the first day of school. The students also do a classroom scavenger hunt to find things in the classroom (because they always love the chance to look around at all the new things), and they do a word search with all of their classmates' names. Second grade is so much fun. Congratulations!

    back to school night

Thank you for the great welcome! I am very excited to make this change. I'm wondering if any of you would be willing to share with me your back to school night welcome. I must admit that this one evening is probably the most difficult time I face in the school year. I would love your suggestions / input. As I write this I am thinking I should start a new thread.
