Hi all! I am so excited to be moving to 2nd grade, by choice, next year! I have been in 4th or 5th for 14 years.

My first, of many questions - what are some of your favorite read-alouds? My daughters loved Beverly Cleary and Laura Ingalls Wilder at that age, but it has been a few years.

Thanks, and feel free to include any other advice!:)

I've read several Ramona and Little House books- they L-O-V-E them. Kate DiCamillo's books have been a hit as well. I also read aloud Savvy by Ingrid Law. They really liked it. I personally liked the 2nd book, Scumble, better, but we didn't have time to read it.
I wanted to read Matilda, but I won't have time :(

I LOVE the Box Car Children, but 3rd grade does a big unit with it, so I have to stay away :(

2nd grade is awesome! I always read Chrysanthemum the first day. Horrible Harry and Miss Malarkey books have been popular with my kids.

The Mercy Watson series by Kate DiCamillo is wonderful. I teach first and recently read the whole series (only 6 books) to my kids and they LOVED them - they kept begging to hear more! I think they would definitely work in second, too.

    Thanks!

Don't forget, I would love to hear your great ideas on any topics. I know we have Common Core, but I am looking for the little catchy things that appeal to this age group.

I have already changed my border to puppy paw prints, and found a cute poster for my door with puppies sitting in Converse tennis shoes. I will write their names on cut-outs and put them around the poster. (Can you tell I am out of school and starting to get really psyched about next year, already?)

I love Kate DiCamillo, but have never heard of this series. Will check it out.
