I noticed we didn't have the "I got the job!" thread that we've had in years past, so I'll start one even though it's months late.

I was offered the job on the spot so I didn't have to wait, but that might be good information to share since that doesn't always happen.

    Position: 9th Grade Phys. Sci.
How many applications sent out: 5 (3 were in one district, 2 were in another)
    How many interviews: 2

I had 3 schools schedule interviews with me from the same district. I got through two interviews, one right after the other, and apparently they started fighting over who would get me. The third school, who scheduled the next day told me this (before I got any official word), said they didn't want to get dragged into the fight, and said that I could choose to cancel the interview if I wanted either of the first two jobs. LOL. I will admit that the ordeal boosted my ego quite a bit. The other school district, I applied late to, so their positions filled before they could schedule an interview, but by that time I already accepted a position.

Position: 3rd grade gen ed (likely looping between 2nd/3rd in future years)
How many applications sent out: can't remember... probably about 10 public schools and a handful or private schools
How many interviews: two screening interviews with public schools, two regular interviews with private schools (one sped, one gen ed - offered sped job, didn't get gen ed job because they found a "better fit for what [they were] looking for right now"), two regular interviews with the school where I'll be working (didn't get first position because they hired an internal candidate, accepted offer for second position I interviewed for)

After 40+ applications, half a dozen interviews, a district where I interviewed for a vice principal position is calling references. My fingers will be crossed all weekend.

My son secured an ESL position in Virginia, just outside of DC. This has been a long haul, over multiple years. His BA is in music, but that never even came close to happening. Licensed for K-6 in NJ, besides the ESL and Music, after a couple of years and more than 60 interviews, we widened the search, and he received three offers on the same day, all ESL, all in VA. I would estimate well over 300 applications over the years, so the ratio to interviews was not that bad, meaning the resume and certs were right, but he always seemed to lose out at the very end. He went to VA to interview for one, and ended up staying three days as the interviews blossomed from one to 12. I think that constant recitation of what he knew, probably more rapid fire, sealed the deal.

My recommendation would be to go to as many job fairs as possible where you will receive the chance to interview multiple times in quick succession. Even if you don't want those jobs, the experience will help. I want to thank everyone who posted questions they were asked - it helped him study, be ready, really have the small stuff down pat so that he could truly focus on the specialized information he needed to have down cold.

NJ is very high numbers looking for fewer jobs available than in years past. I saw just recently that more and more candidates are relocating to find jobs, many after trying for long periods of time. I think that ultimately he chose the position where he felt he would be supported, with a family feel to the staff. I can only add that it was a rocky road, with lots of low points, but he is thrilled to feel that he will get a chance to put his education to use at last.

    Position: middle school math
How many applications sent out: 2. You apply to districts here, not really to individual jobs. In addition to the city district, I sent in an app to a suburb that I didn't actually want to work in just out of curiosity - they didn't call me at all. In addition to the formal applications, I sent out probably 8-12 emails to principals at schools I was especially interested in within the district. This was fairly effective in getting interviews rather than waiting around to get them through the matching system.
How many interviews: I had something like 5-6 scheduled, one of which was informal. After not hearing back from the informal, I accepted the first offer at the first formal interview and cancelled the rest of the interviews.

Yeah... I keep looking for a thread where you explain more about how you got this job and your feelings on it. You've been so open about your job search and your sub troubles that I just assumed you would post more about this new job... but you're obviously not required to divulge, despite the interest.

Way to keep a lid on this until it was a done deal - so lawyer like! I've been smiling for you since I first read the post. Hubby asked what was up, and I told him a friend got good news. Since we have been down a path longer than yours to see our son settled in a teaching job, hubby just smiled and said to add "well done." :)
