If you're married, you may be able to just rest up this summer, but if you are single, you may need to work this summer. Do any of you get paid 12 months a year? My district check goes from September through July 20 or so. What are you doing in the summer. Working? Relaxing? If not working, do you save money for summer? I may be tutoring this summer or working at a store.
I'm married (and in my 2nd year teaching) and I will still be working in the summer. I will be teaching six weeks of summer school.
Hopefully not looking for a new job My salary is spread out over 12 months so I don't plan to work this summer. I'll be doing a lot of planning for next year, traveling, catching up with friends, and relaxing. I'm really looking forward to it!
I'm also paid over 12 months, so working is not a must for me. I'm working on my masters, so I'll concentrate on that and just relax. I'm also planning on taking a couple of mini-vacations. I'm single, with no kids, so it's nice to have all the time at home to relax, but I do start to get bored after awhile. I'm one of those people who needs to be out and about doing things.
I, personally, am having a baby in June. So I won't be doing much outside of home. If I hadn't been, I would probably have been looking for a summer job, perhaps tutoring, while continuing to look for a job for the fall. I am on a one-year leave replacement contract right now.
I will be starting my first year of teaching in August. So I won't get my first paycheck until September 15th. I am subbing now, and have thought about teaching summer school, but I will be at the primary campus (PK-1st) and they do not have summer school....I am married, but students loan repayment starts in June! UUGH! I wish I could think of something to do for some $$, it is so expensive to set up your first classroom.
My district allows us to choose how we want paid...9 months or 12 months. I choose 12 months! But I am not much of a home body, I like to be busy and out and about, so I'll be off to working at my previous job (They can't wait for me to come back)!! Saving money for once school starts again!! I will also be getting some planning ready for next year. I was hired a week before school started this year and didn't have time to get some things planned and ready that I would have liked!
Well I am temporary right now, since I just graduated in January and found a job the same month. So I guess I will be sending out resumes and HOPEFULLY interviewing. To tell you the truth, I am super stressed about finding a job for next year. I just hate the unknown! My husband is going back to school this summer so he will work full time M-F and then go to school and work part-time M-F nights! I am going to be so bored and lonely. My mom said I should just move back home! If we hadn't bought this house, I would be so tempted to. Imagine how much money we could save! But anyway, the point I was trying to get to was that I do not want to find some silly PT job in retail or waiting tables because it will require me to work weekends and that will be the only time I will see my husband. I wish I could find a tutoring job but I don't know how to go about that.
I get paid on the 12 month schedule and thank God, because I'm getting married a week after school gets out! I can't wait. We are going on a cruise to the Caribbean and then hopefully I will have a new house to decorate!
I'm paid through the school year. This summer I'm helping out a veteran teacher who does painting, odd jobs, and landscaping. I will also have some military time I need to put in as well.
My salary is also spread out for the 12 months. I did sign up to teach art for 3 weeks during the summer. (turns out our school is offering summer_school this yr) The hours are only part_time....and at a private school it'll be gas money....but still it's something. I did actually apply to my local public school district for the coming school year.....but not holding my breath w/the continued surplus of elementary ed teachers out here.
I am going to be trying to get re-hired or looking for another job (I'm on a temp. contract), moving into my new house, visiting my parents in South Dakota, and attempting to paint my own car. We'll see how that goes! Temporary teachers get paid by the day in my district, so I've been putting a portion of my check into savings to "pay" myself over the summer.
I will be working as a paraed in a 4-week summer school program. I did this last year and really enjoyed it! I'll also be job-searching as I was in a non-continuing position and in my spare time planning our wedding
I don't get paid over the summer. But even if I did, I would still need to work. I am just not making enough overall to not work this summer. (I am married; my husband makes about half of my salary.) I still haven't decided what to do. Summer school is an option, but it only pays about $60/day for a month. If I did that it would be hard finding work for the rest of the summer. Also, I need to make more than that per day. I might wait tables, which is what I did before teaching.
12 year pay check here...I am really tempted to just relax and think ahead for next year all summer......but I think I will too overly bored while all my other friends/fam are working. I may get a part time job data processing or something, so that hours can be flexible and job demand unstressful...plus extra pocket money never hurts
I really just want to take a few weeks and do nothing! This was my firswt year teaching and I am just worn out! I was hired 4 days before the start of the school year last August. Not only was it my first year of teaching but I was finishing up my master's degree (I graduate May 13th) working on my AIG certification (I'll have that completed by June 20th) and to top it all off broke my shoulder this winter. I just really want to relax!! Anybody else feel that way?
I actually got laid off from my previous job in March and was fortunate enough to get hired at the local district job fair last month. Between unemployment and my husband's paycheck, I'm fortunate that I can relax and enjoy the summer and get myself prepard for the new school year.
Luckly I am on a 12 month contract, however I know that I will want a little "mad cash" to spend this summer, so I am working at a summer camp for the month of June, and taking July and the first week of August off. Our last day of school is the 23rd, and then we have two teacher days after that...so I will have a week or so before I have to start working again.
I get paid 12 mos a year. I was thinking about taking the summer off and just relaxing after a very stressful first year of teaching. Instead, I will be teaching a version of summer school called summer camp that is more hands-on. I'll also be starting my single subject science authorization. I'll be taking a math for science class. In addition, I'll be going to San Diego for an AVID conference. Hopefully somewhere in there I will have time to plan for next year (assuming I find out what I'm actually teaching next year).
Nothing except read mindless romance novels and sleep. Well I am sure I will do a little more than that I have two kids. This was my first year teaching and I am so glad to be off and paid during the summer!
I am single. I will be privately tutoring some students that teachers in the building have refered to me this summer (if that all works out and the parents follow through). Also, I am teaching summer school for my disctrict through the end of June. I actually hope to have some down time this summer to relax.
I'm on a modified 10-month pay schedule, so my June check is going to be huge. Yay. Any extra money I make will be used for paying off debt, as next summer I am getting married. I would like to take the summer off entirely, but I know I'd get really bored really fast. On the side, I have been and will continue to be working at the local adult/continuation school with folks working on passing the GED. I might pick up some hours at my old college job (assistant in the X-ray department at a local hospital) or see about getting some work at a friend's auto body shop. Who knows? Maybe I'll just enjoy some lazy days on the beach or in the mountains with some great literature (the reason I got into this mess in the first place) or rot away on the couch. Having the choice is pretty nice... finally...

We ge tthe option to get paid over 12 months but they just split the check and don't pay interest...Our local credit union has a summer saver account where you can do the math yourself and put money in a savings account, where they pay 6% interest I made about an extra $150 this way (every penny counts). This summer will be planning new classes I am taking over, reviewing and revising what worked and what didn't, and also reading teh school manual (that I got the day before school started)...the asb technician is about to kill me because I'm always screwing up POs (I advise a club)...when she asks whether I read the manual I just tell her I'm reading it this summer. Will also cut my girls down to half days at daycare (they are loaded up with summer camps and field trips) and taking them to the park or local Science Discovery center, Zoo, etc the rest of the time.
I'm finishing up my second year. Last year I taught summer school and tutored all summer long. This summer I am just teaching summer school and tutoring my younger brother-in-law. I am also taking a couple of classes. I guess I'm going to enjoy my last summer to myself, because in September my baby is due. I will also work on lesson plans for my materinity leave and get my room ready for next year. My classroom is changing into something else, so I need to get ready for that. I would love to get a part time job, but I don't really want to work the weekends, I enjoy having them off.
You can get a deferment until your first paycheck in most cases. This is what I did and it helped me a lot!
We get paid for 12 months, but we get the last three months all at the same time. I hope I can spend it wisely and pay the bills all through the summer!
Our district pays us during the summer month. This year I opted not to do the summer academy at our school. I think I rather relax and rest for next year. I agree after the first year..I really need this break.
just hired I just finished my credential program, got hired to teach a fifth grade yesterday, and am in the throes of planning my daughter's wedding on 07/07/07. The funny thing is that I am more excited about getting ready for fifth grade than I am about the wedding!
Oh, I forgot - I am also nannying a three-year-old boy and his seven-month-old sister part-time this summer.
I just graduated and have applied for jobs and accepted a position as a kindergarten teacher!! I am taking 3 grad courses right now to finish up my reading endorsement. I worked for 2 weeks (just enough to say goodbye....) before my classess started and once they finish (which I can't wait for them to end!) I will just be relaxing and preparing for my new classroom! I am married but my husband is also a full time student....
I will be entering my second year of teaching in August. This summer I am teaching a two-week program for pre-k students called, "Safetytown." I am also starting online classes to receive my Masters in Early Childhood Reading & Literacy at Walden University Online.
I'm not a really new teacher - I've been teaching for 5 years. I get paid over 12 months. Thank goodness I don't really have to work in the summer. I'm working on my Masters online, but am taking the summer off from that as well. My husband and I are taking our 3 daughters on a cruise to Alaska. I've also been catching up on books that I've been wanting to read but haven't had time to read. I'm a reading junkie but unfortunately don't always have free time to do it!
I'll get a lump sum next June...I'm going to pay ahead on rent and bills so that there won't be a whole lot of "money I can't spend" sitting in my account. Interest has its good points, but having not having to think about it sounds more relaxing, at least for the first time out... I'm also thinking about looking for some extremely-part-time job at a bookstore for that summer, for a little bit of fun money (and an employee discount I'd actually use!). But I don't know for sure about that; being able to lose track of what day it is might be fun for a while.
This was my first year of teaching and I needed this summer off. I get paid 12 months and am married so money, while more is always nice, isn't a real issue. I spent the first two or so weeks sleeping as much as my body told me it needed and finished up my research paper for a course I took in the spring. Bad move taking a course my first year in! ANyway, now leisurly catching up on stuff around home that I've neglected, re-mulching my landscaping, reading (10 books so far and counting - didn't have much time for pleasure reading that first year), little side trips.
two years ago i taught at a private kindergarten and i worked the daycare's summer camp for summers. last school year i subbed in the public school which led to me gettng a teaching job this coming fall in kindergarten in a district i loooooooooove! this summer i have been babysitting full time for a family that has a 6 year old boy and a 8 year old girl. next summer when i wont have to worry about income due to a 12 month pay plan, im not sure what i'll do. it is very tempting to just relax but i wonder if other people will look down on me for that. then again, its one of the perks of being a teacher! who knows what i'll do.
