Hi! I just got my first real maternity leave position (just graduated, have been subbing) teaching 5th grade. I student taught in kindergarten and have always been with the younger kids so this is all new to me! I was unable to go into the class beforehand because the teacher had to have an emergency c-section so I start tomorrow! Do 5th graders do anything for Valentine's Day?

Congratulations Lauren! I hope you enjoy the "big" kids!

I would think that 5th graders do some Valentine's Day stuff. You have two weeks to find some activities - and find out if 5th graders have a VD party at your school.

It depends on the school. We don't have Valentines party in 5th grade at my school. Good luck with your new placement! 5th graders are fun!

We do parties at our school. You could always do some kind of writing prompt or math/graphing activity using valentine's candy.

We aren't allowed a party at our school, and our wellness policy forbids teachers from giving out any food item, so I usually give the kids a valentine's pencil and eraser. It depends on your school. Welcome to fifth grade - fifth graders are the best!

My 5th grade kids exchange valentines. Some bring in candy, too. I usually have them write Valentine stories using the conversation hearts candies. I give them about 8 or so and they must use all in a short story. They turn out really funny.

What a cute idea! You don't care if I steal that idea do you?

Boy, I hope not! I am going to do that too! :p We don't exchange valentine's, but I have a little party. My colleague and I are going to put together a trivia pursuit type of game to play.

Like the others said, it really depends on your school. Good luck!
