Just saying hello, I will definitely be roaming this site throughout the year for ideas. I was hired last month after substituting for 2 years, I was lucky enough to get hired right after I finished my credential. I am so excited, but also overwhelmed. I am very, very excited to get 5th grade. I student taught 4th and 1st grade, but I enjoyed the content and the personalities of the older ones much better (not to say I didn't enjoy 1st grade either- I did!). I've been building my personal library with 5th grade books and I am currently reading the Shadow Children series which is amazing. Working my way through Wong's First Day of School and building my classroom management procedures and rules as well. Lots to do! I still haven't received my classroom key to start putting things on the wall yet! I will poking around and asking questions, so thought I would say hi. :thumb:
Hi Everyone, I am new to teaching and will be teaching Grade 5 for the first time this year. With that said, I am a litter nervous setting up my program and making sure I am teaching everything I need to be. My biggest worry right now, is my Language Arts program. Does anyone have any suggestions or an outline of their language program that they wouldn't mind sharing to get me started on the right track? Thanks!
We use Trophies (Harcourt Brace), and the language program is built in. I think it's harder than other programs, but I supplement with lots of online games and lots of practice.
I've been working on getting my classroom together. I have my desks arranged the way I liked them (U-shaped). I bought some new chairs for my desk and kidney table and put those together. Got an awesome area rug (ethan allen!) for my classroom library area- it was donated. My classroom is coming together, I need to start taking pictures to remember these "beginning days" since I know it will be completely different by the end of the year. The only sucky part has been taking out a million staples that have accumulated in the walls over the years from the previous teacher.
Next step- put up bulletin boards, I am definitely going to need creative help from my mom, girlfriend and co-workers...
