ok, i have posted on here many times but now need it ore than ever------------ I have my 3rd and final interview this monday demo lesson scenerio it is the beginging of dec, 4th grade and i have to introduce a novel christmas carol by charles dickens and have 15 minutes to present the lesson any help??????????????????
I taught this last December to my 10th graders. Granted, older than 4th, but concept is the same. Have you read the book or only just seen the movie(s)? (I think the Patrick Stewart one is nice but probably a bit dark for 4th graders...I think there's some cartoon versions out there). Anyway, we did a webquest. Below is the link. Yes, it's for older kids, but you could get some info to get you started. THis particular webquest approaches the novel from the perspective of Dicken's London (mid-19th century) by creating a travel brochure. You could intro this lesson with an into to Victorian London during Dicken's time by modeling a travel brochure that you created (using the webquest for your research), then tell about the novel/story with a quick film clip from the movie. I would assume you would have access to technology, maybe even a Smartboard, but, if not, do the brochure to intro with the idea that they would 1) read the story/see the film, 2) do a webquest/make a brochure 3) I know there's a play out there (it's in a textbook I used once but don't have access to anymore). Be sure and tie in your state standards, learning styles, etc. Oh, and this is good for technology/research cuz the brochure should be word process with pix, clip art, font variety, etc. Here's the link: http://scots.covenant.edu/depts/education/dickens/index.htm Hope this helps and is not too involved for 15 mins. GLad it's you and not me. Not exactly in the Christmas spirit just yet!
Ok Willsgirl THANK YOU< THANK YOU, you are the only one who responded back to me and i appreciate that more than you know, so thank you. I did do a webquest and kindof used yours like a template. I probably spent 15 hours preparing for a 15 min demo, but the interview went well. I should find out by tomoorw if i got it or not. so please keep ur fingers crossed for me and maybe even ur toes (lol) Truely thank you for posting back to me!!!!!!
Fingers and toes crossed! (Sorry, I didn't reply to the original. While I LOVE the story, it's not exactly in the middle of my area of expertise and I had no advice!)
well thanks for the crossing, I jst got the mail, no letter so thatsa good thing. Frantically awaiting the phone to ring even though I might no hear today. The board meeting is tomorrow, so i know they have made their final decisions. Do you think I should call or just wait?????????????? Please tell me aliceacc, u are like an expert
I have no public school background, so I know no more than you. But if the school board meeting is tomorrow, they may have to wait and vote or something. I say go out today. If you're NOT home, it's almost a guarantee that the phone will ring
Wish I could get out of this house today, but waiting on the direct tv people to come and fix the box. My two year old is having a bad bout of the terrible 2's today, not making my stress level any lower lol so don't call? it's killing me, not knowing
I am sorry to hear that. But you know what?! That just means the job you are supposed to get is still waiting for you. Keep your chin up. Tomorrow is a new day filled with new opportunities.
Thanks so much for the kind words, I really thought got this one. There isn't anything I would have changed during my demo lesson, I was so confident. I took it rather hard, but you are right when its meant to be it will be.. Do you think it is too late to apply at other schools, should I just wait to apply placces and just sub? Thank you everyone, I really need this forum it keeps me from throwing in the towel.
Well, not much is going to make you feel better right now, but I would like to point out something that you mentioned in your last post. You said you would not have changed anything about the demo. That is good. You know you went in there, you were yourself, and presented your best. If that wasn't good enough, then that's not where you need to be. (Repeat the last two sentences until you feel better, it took me 2 weeks!)
Apply EVERYWHERE. There's still time, especially in this part of the country. In NY most schools don't start until after Labor Day; I would imagine that PA is on a similar schedule. So we still have a month of openings waiting for your application!
I know that you are heart broken. I went through the same thing last month and am still looking for a position. Keep applying - some districts hire even after the school year starts. You will find a job and it will be the right one for you!
I did not find a job last summer before school starts, I didn't even get an interview for a real teaching job (just a para job I knew I couldn't have because I am not a reading specialist). But I subbed and kept applying. I volunteered for a LTS no one else wanted in Alternative education (umm, once I did it I know why no one wanted it  I keep applying. I was hired for my current district in late October and started the first week of Nov. Moral of the story.......never quit applying! Well till you have a job
Where in PA are you? My school has some openings posted on the website. I'm in the Lehigh Valley area.
I am in the beaver county area, not too sure where Leigh High Valley is, but I definately would be willing to travel a resonable distance pm your email and school website, I can take a better look at how far Thanks for thinking of me
Sorry you didn't get the job. It's really tough around here, but keep trying! Apply everywhere and sub if you have to. Mopt people that get jobs here anymore usually sub 2-5 year before getting a contract. Enrollments are declining and not many people retire. Keep your chin up and keep moving along!!! Lehigh Valley is near the Poconos. In between Philly and Wilkes Barre.
