WEll, it's a bit old for 3rd grade, but you could always do the old Carole Burnett take off of Scarlett O'Hara, where she dresses up in drapes (complete with curtain rod!)

How about Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz? Braids, dress, socks, stuffed dog in a basket....

I usually dress as Ramona (from all the Beverly Cleary books) because I just love her! I wear old jeans and tennis shoes with a tshirt and draw on freckles.

Paper Bag Princess (do you know that book? It's fabulous!!)

Wear a crown (get at the Party Store or Dollar Store)
Cut a paper bag to make a 'vest' to wear over a tan top and tan skirt.

I dressed up as Amelia Bedilia once.

Just the maid's outfit keeps it pretty simple.

Another time I dressed up as Old Mother West Wind and my class came as the Merry Little Breezes.

How about Junie B. Jones - or maybe one of the American Girls? Mother Goose might work.

Nate the Great? Tape brown paper flaps onto a baseball cap, wear a trench coat and carry a magnifying glass.

Well... since it's Dr. Seuss' birthday on Friday... I would be doing Cat in the Hat or one of his other characters. If not that, I would totally do PIPPI LONGSTOCKING.
