    Hi All,

So here's the deal- I recently accepted a position as a math specialist/coach. I will teach a math (specials) class to 3rd and 4th grade students each day (40 min long), and the rest of my time will be spent coaching teachers to improve math instruction in grades 3 and 4. I will also do a math league with our gifted third graders.

I like cute themes and want something catchy and creative for my class. I would love to have it relate to frogs since I have a ton of frog stuff already, but I'm open to other ideas as well. FYI- our school mascot is a mustang.

I could also use ideas for management plans from anyone who teaches a similar kind of class. I will be seeing about 400 students total. Each class will have about 25 students and will come to me every eight days so it has to be something I can stay on top of without being too complicated. It would be awesome if it tied in to math somehow.

I taught a specials class last year and I saw every class in the whole school. While I didn't teach math, I was in a position where I saw each class every 7 school days or so. One of the ideas that I had for management was to create somewhat of a point or check system and have the classes "compete" against each other. For example, each time you see the class, they can get a total of 3 checks, one for good behavior, one for participation, etc. I thought about taking one of those big incentive charts and giving each class a row and keeping track of the points that way. Then every so often (like every 9 weeks), the class from each grade level with the most checks gets some type of reward. I never got that system into place for a number of reasons, so I'm sorry but I can't tell you how well it worked =( It's so hard to keep a good system when you don't see them that often.

Maybe instead of checks you could turn it into a point system to incorporate math.

Hope that helped a little bit!

All of my theme pictures and ideas can be found here and here. Congrats on your new position. It sounds like a nice balance.
