Hello! First week of fifth grade went pretty well. I can't say great only because it was also very draining. But, students seem to respond well to me. They also seem excited about learning. Anyways, I seem to be struggling in the area of PE. We have about 20 minutes everyday for PE. This week, we got together with the other 5th grade class and just played kickball. Problem is the girls really are not into the game. Today we played Kickball Basketball. Some played for a little while, then gave up. So, I was wondering if any of you have some really great PE games where ALL students are involved the WHOLE time. I don't want just a couple playing at a time while the rest are standing and waiting. I just got the Kagan book Goofy Games and Silly Sports. There are a lot of fun games in there (there are 20 some versions of tag alone). A lot of them sound like a lot of fun and there are some that can be used in the classroom as well.
My daughter is in 5th grade. Their favorite game is similar to flag football, without the ball. They have two teams, one with flags. The other team chases them to get the flags. She says its so much fun.
In college we had to take a P.E. for kids class, and I learned a bunch of fun little games to play. Here are a few ideas to pass along: triangle tag: work in groups of threes, two hold both sents of hand and the other odd one out is "it." they need to tag a previously chosen person out of the pair, while the two holding hands have to try to move in such a way that the it person doesnt tag. they love this, but it gets very tiring and is more of a getting started game. harry potter tag ( we had to make up getting started games, this was mine!): one is it and they have to tag others. if you are tagged you become stupefied, and the others can save you by casting lumos and bringing you back to life and start again. fastest ball in the west: its a team building game and i love to play it during the unit opener of our first unit of open court: cooperation and competition. you give them a ball, and tell the class there is only 2 rules to the game. 1. the ball cannot touch the floor, 2. everyone must touch the ball once. they have to see if they can get everyone to touch the ball in a record amount of time. i use either a stop watch or my wristwatch. its interesting because you learn a lot about who are the leaders and followers, the creative thinkers in your class. there is no right or wrong answer, just they have to beat their own time. the fastest i ever had was a class of about 32 or 33 touching the ball in 3 seconds. they loved it and asked if they could keep trying to get even faster. sorry i had written so much. i hope it is understood. :haha:
I like the Harry Potter tag game. For the last one, I'm not totally sure if I understand. So, you have a ball and do they pass the ball around or hit it up in the air?
You give the kids the ball and they need to decide how to organize themselves to figure out how to get it to go fastest. they can throw it, toss it, anything but not touch the floor. they soon start to become really creative with how to get everyone to touch the ball. they have to let you know when to time them. you time them and can challenge them to figure out other ways to get everyone to touch the ball faster. they can stand in a line and someone run down with the ball, they can toss it to one another, etc. it really is a good game for thinking outside the box and challenging them. i hope i helped explain further

Our kids do a lot of sports in Phys Ed, focussing on skill development--volleyball, basketball, soccer, badminton, track and field, etc. As far as games go, when I taught Phys Ed, I always put the students into groups of 3-4 and had them invent their own game. They then had to write the rules (procedural writing), teach the game to the class (oral communication) and then the class played the game.

I played this game today with my class and they had so much fun! It was perfect to play outside. It was so hot so we played it underneath the tree. They had fun, worked together, got some exercise, it was perfect! Thanks!!
Eraser Tag is a good one... not just another tag game. I'll do my best to try to explain it. Divide into 2 teams (mine LOVE to do boys against girls but every class is different and sometimes that is unfair teams). There is a goal line on opposite ends of the field. Both teams line up on their lines and 1 team is "it." The team that is "it" huddles up and picks one person to hide a small pink eraser in her hand closed. The entire team lines up and on my whistle they do whatever it takes to get the girl with the eraser to cross the goal line without getting tagged. The boys can run to tag them and where ever they have been tagged they have to freeze. This is where the boys would just try to tag every girl before she crosses because they don't know who is hiding the eraser. The boys can either run after them or hang back and "guard" the goal line. Once everyone is either frozen or across the line I yell out, "Who has the eraser?" and they show us. If that girl got across the goal line without being tagged then they get a point. Then they switch. There is a lot of strategy in this game by building a wall around the person with the eraser or trying to fake the other team out... exc. Hopefully that makes sense!
Yoga and relaxation can be great for those days when kids just need to calm down a little bit. Physical fitness days are good, too--students can lift weights, jog, do jumping jacks and push-ups. Woo! Team sports are fun.
2 games that are always crowd pleasers are: Chuck the chicken, and Fox and Rabbit The grade 6's even asked to take the chicken outside for recess to play it outside. Both of these games are for continuous activity and full class participation. Chuck the Chicken materials: rubber chicken or equivalent The teams: whole class split into two equal teams or Boys against Girls if less of one gender in the class. The play: one team wins the chicken at the coin toss, or pick a closest number wins. this team will be known as team 1. The other team (team 2) will scatter around the playing area (outside or in the gym) Team 1 says "Chuck the Chicken" and tosses it as far away from the other team as possible. Rule is you have to toss it at least 10 feet away from where the tosser is standing. While team 1 tosses it, they form a tight cluster with one member holding out their hand. the tosser runs around the cluster and slaps the hand counting one point against the other team (1...2...3...4...). The whole cluster says the number loudly so the other team can hear it. Meanwhile, team 2 races over to the tossed chicken and forms a line behind the first person who gets to the chicken first. Team 2 starts passing the chicken over and under, over and under, through the line up until it reaches the end of the line. The person at the end of the line then says "chuck the chicken" and tosses it as far away from team 1 as they can, forms the cluster and starts counting like team one did. once team 2 says "chuck the chicken", Team 1 that was clustered and counting, breaks from their cluster and runs after the chicken, lining up for the over, under, over, under, routine. The game is over when the first team reaches "x" number of points, or time limit expiry (5+ minute) We played this in university and it is great fun even with adults. Fox and rabbit Materials: none Teams: pair off into even numbers making rabbit burrows, and one group is the fox and rabbit. if odd numbering, have 2 foxes. Setup: every pair finds a spot in the play area and creates a burrow.(note there are 2 different ways to create burrows) burrow 1: the students lay face down beside each other burrow 2: the students stand up and face each other connecting hands to make a hole between them The play: The fox chases the rabbit, if they catch the rabbit, the roles reverse where the fox becomes the rabbit, and the rabbit becomes the fox. The rabbit runs and tries to hide in a Burrow. If you are playing with burrow 1, have the rabbit lay down (from the left side) to the burrow, and the person on the right side of the burrow becomes the rabbit. if using burrow 2, the rabbit runs and pops into a hole standing up, and places their hands between the hands of the hole (hard to explain, place both of your hand together like when you have finished clapping. the rabbit would slide their hand inbetween to make the hands from the hole separate). The rabbit will face only one person, the person that is not facing the rabbit( the person behind) becomes the new rabbit. This game is a good warm up game, where the kids get to run around and switch. To make the rabbit burrows more active they can "dance" or "boogy" if standing, and can do pushups or stomach crunches if laying down If the fox is exhausted, freeze the game and have the fox switch places with a person who hasn't had a turn to run around yet. When does the other team get a chance to hide the eraser? or if team 1 crosses the goal line, team 1 scores a point, but if team 1 didn't get across the goal line, team 2 scores a point. I like it, thanks for the submission
It alternates teams each time. Boys try then girls and back and forth, reardless of whether they score or not. As long as both teams have an equal number of turns! : )
Check www.pecentral.com for lots of ideas. One game we used to play at came was Elbow Tag. It's kinda tricky to explain but easy to play. You need an even number of players, so when we had an odd number, I'd play too. Everyone needs a partner, and they link arms and spread out over the playing area. Split one pair up (we'll call them A and B for simplicity), they're the runner and the chaser. A chases B. B can avoid getting tagged by linking up with a different pair, and the odd person then is the new runner. If B hooks up with C of the CD pair, then D is the new runner (so A chases D). Then D can hook up with someone else, and so on. IF the chaser catches the runner, then they switch and the runner becomes the chaser and the chaser becomes the runner. Kids LOVE this game... it can get a little crazy and confusing, but it's fun. I usually make a rule that you can't hook up with the pair you just left.
