Ok, I have just received a call this afternoon from a human resource department offering me a job for what I believe to be a 3rd grade, inner city, reading language arts position. (They have been departmentalized.) I plan to accept it, but the thing is I have been out of teaching for two years and am thinking where do I start!? I taught for 6 years, but I feel like a newbie when it comes to Reading Language Arts. I am from TN if that is necessary to know. Can anyone give me some thoughts on areas to focus on? I haven't even finished my paperwork yet, but I figure getting in a focused mindset can't hurt! :thanks::help::)

Think about classroom management and your rules and procedures

I would start by going to the district's website to see if curriculum maps or pacing guides are posted. I would also go to the school you see if it is possible to get a copy of the reading series that is being used.

Yes and Yes. I had typed up classroom management and behavior management plans and included them in my mini-portfolio during my interview. I have heard the third grade team is very tight knit and values consistency across the board.

What a joy it would be to teach just LA to 3rd grade. Make sure and read aloud daily. I don't know how it is with Common Core, but when I taught 3rd, it was the most creative and enjoyable of all the subjects for me to teach. Do they have a writing program?

I am not sure yet on a writing program. I am still in the very preliminary stages.
