I teach video production and want to incorporate 8mm/16mm home movies. I have digitized many rolls so that they can manipulate them in our editor. I have two ideas:
    1) since these are silent movies (usually), then adding the dialogue and foley would be a challenge. This could be done several ways--by trying to recreate what you think actually was being said, or to create a wholly different, unexpected, and yet plausible alternative, or to create something surreal: 3 yr old speaking with adult voice, etc

    2) create a narrative around them and use modern video to go along with them--but thats kind of half-baked in my mind...

    3) create a historical documentary along the lines of "on this day while Diane was opening presents [in the home movie] blah blah blah was unfolding in the world--but thats kind of half-baked too.

Would love thoughts, comments, other ideas, etc

The first idea is quite fun. I remember when I was in middle school, my friends and I used to mute anime and the dub them ourselves.

Of course, if you have options to incorporate background music and sound effects, then it could be an interesting lesson on how audio influences the visual aspect of the movie. From the same video, you can have a wide variety of interpretations and atmospheres.
