I am applying to work as a job coach for adults with disabilities. I'm trying to come up with skills that a SPED teacher uses that transition nicely into the adult population. I have things like organizational skills, flexibility, attention to detail. I'm looking for a few more original ideas. Any ideas?
Depends on the philosophy and purpose of the program. Some teach prevocational skills. You could list ideas. Some are looking for the ability to hunt for jobs and networking skills. Some want the ability to provide accommodation and supports on the job site. I am a director of one of these programs so I can offer more but would like to know more about the program before doing so.
The program is a residential community where about half of the residents work in the community in sheltered ways. I would be the liaison between the facility and the community.
Advocating for clients/students would be a good one to include. Also, knowing and complying with the laws like The American's with Disabilities Act would be another very important thing to add to your application.
If you have done things to match the skill set, I recommend using a functional résumé to highlight these whereas a traditional job duties one might not. You might include experiences you've had that show: advocacy special education supports presentation networking skills initiative organization marketing/promotional skills job hunt skills (a functional résumé, a small portfolio or business card or brochure, research on the company, and a nice cover letter are all ways you can show you know this stuff) What they want is someone that can provide special supports on the job but also present themselves in the community, find resources, and be confident that you have the skills and community presence/people skills to provide a face in the community. Dress nicely. I also had a prop showing how I collect business cards and have already begun networking, etc. Because I am trying to find a new direction where we are applying a trifold of services and the third component of teaching vocational skills has never really been implemented, then I am also looking for teaching experiences, group management, a creative thinker, a problem solver, and someone who can deal with doing so while differentiating for a variety of needs.
I took all of your suggestions, finished the application and cover letter, and sent it off. Now we wait. I appreciate all your help!
