Ok. I have a job. Supposedly. A principal asked if I wanted to be considered for a position on the 5th. She can't actually "offer" me a position, it has to come from HR.

So, I accepted her verbal. I went to textbook training last week and today went to help with registration. I haven't received an offer from HR yet. I haven't signed a contract yet. I haven't even HEARD from HR yet.

Also, what I was hired to teach isn't what I want, or really am qualified to teach.

Today I got a call from a school district I've been talking to for months. They had a resignation today and I was the first person they thought of. It's for my dream job. It's a half hour farther away from my house than the other job. But it's my dream job.

So, I have an interview today at 3pm pacific.

Is this bad? Is it unethical? I haven't signed anything legally tying me to this job. I'm emotionally tied to the job and would feel bad about leaving at this point. But I seriously feel that if they were more professional about my offer, they would have had me sign something last week.

    What do you guys think?

Well, if you haven't signed the contract, then there is no binding agreement. At least, that's the way I was always brought up. If you don't have it in writing, it doesn't exist. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I agree! With everything I have been through, trying to get a job. Given the opportunity to take what you love is what I would do. Unfortunately, school systems are businesses...at least that is how they are here. If they are going to put off offering jobs until the last minute, they should realize that others will do the same thing. If they know that 5th isn't what you really want, they should understand.

I agree with the other responses. If you've not yet signed the contract, then you should go for the job you want. Take the position that you think would be most enjoyable. The more you enjoy your job, the better the teacher you will be. :) Good luck!

As far as ethical, I wouldn't worry about that- it is unethical to string someone along without a contract for so long so close to the beginning of the school year! If they give you a hard time, just mention that you were worried that the formal offer wouldnt go through because it was taking so long!

I haven't heard. School starts for them monday. So, I might hear very early in the morning. But at this point I don't think they'll hire me. I'd probably say no anyway.

What was it you didn't like about the second one? Do you think you'll stay with the 5th grade one?

Have you heard anything further from HR at the position you have been doing the training for? The fifth grade position? Is it still an option?

I say take the "Dream" job. You haven't signed anything legally binding. And ask your self "If I don't take this dream job will I be kicking myself later on?"

Well, school started today in the district where I recently interviewed. I didn't get a call, so I'm guessing I didn't get the job. That's ok. I would have felt weird quitting my current district/shool the week before school starts.

kidatheart, today I heard from my school district (and it's an 8th grade position, I was offered the position on August 5th). I was told that my paperwork has not been lost or misplaced, but that they're waiting for an administrator to sign my paperwork. I have no idea what that means, though.

I went to the new teacher training/induction meeting today. It was good. Tomorrow is new hire orientation. I'll be there, too.
