Could you end with creating a class clerihew? That would set them up for the teacher's lesson of them writing their own using the assigned topics. Or you could find more examples of clerihews and add in some poems that are close but do not meet all of the qualifications; have them choose which are/are not and why. Looks good so far!

Thank you for the advice. I do not know the topics that the teacher has for the kids. Who do you think would be a good person that we could do together??

You could pick one of the kids, one whose feelings would not get hurt. :) Or your principal, the head teacher, etc. If you pick a famous person just make sure it is not on the teacher's list of topics for the kids. Any sports figure or person in history would be good, but I would personally shy away from current politicians.

Introduce the clarihew poem by talking about clarihew (mention that he invented this type of poetry at the age of 16- as seen on a web site). Study the rhyming pattern of the poems.

Closure: Ask the following review questions: What is a clarihew poem? Who was it invented by? What is the rhyming pattern like? If you were to create a clarihew poem, who would you write about and why? Then read another funny poem as a class. As somebody stated above, have a volunteer come up and make a poem about that student.

Do you think Martin. L. King would be good?
