Hi Everyone! I finally finished writing my lesson plan and wondered if you all would be so kind to look it over. I am teaching the lesson tomorrow morning for the long-term subs maternity leave position that is available in the district I am in now as a sorta daily sub. Here is what I plan to do. I appreciate any and all suggestions. Don't worry about the format it isn't accurate on here. Thanks so much! Congruent vs. Similar Figures – Objective: Students will categorize two-dimensional congruent verses similar figures. Students will write or draw the difference between congruent figures and similar figures. Pre-assessment: Students have learned about two-dimensional figures. Materials: Smart board (various math websites) Chart paper (math word wall, categorizing chart) Individual charts (for each pair) Cut out shapes (big ones for whole group & individual ones) Procedure: Initiation: Explain to students that they will categorize and describe differences between congruent verses similar figures (show objective written out). Development of Lesson: Show math word wall and “categorize” sentence strip. Explain meaning of categorizing. Add “categorize” to word wall. Categorize 2 dimensional verses 3 dimensional figures (whole group quick warm up) to better understand what “categorize” means. Show and explain congruent vs. similar figures sentence strips (one at a time). Add to word wall. Using Smart Board show website http://www.harcourtschool.com/glossary/math_advantage/definitions/cong ruent.html (for congruent) Show http://www.harcourtschool.com/glossary/math_advantage/definitions/similar.html (for similar figures). Discuss difference. Model whole group how to categorize cut out figures and then ask for students help in doing this. Next, explain activity - work in pairs to categorize their own shapes. They will glue the shapes (pairs) in the correct categories (congruent or similar). As student’s work in pairs, I will go around to monitor and see if they have any questions. Closure: Show website http://www.studyzone.org/testprep/math4/e/congruentsimilar3p.cfm Students will tell if each pair is congruent or similar (final check). Discuss what they found easy and hard about categorizing these shapes. Students complete an exit slip where they will write and/or draw the difference between congruent figures and similar figures. Evaluation: I will look at each student pair’s chart on whether they were able to categorize the shapes correctly. Look at their exit slips to determine whether they were able to write and/or draw the difference between congruent and similar figures.
Looks good..though (and this is small) on your objective: Students will categorize two-dimensional congruent figuresverses similar figures. That way the sentence is uniform! Good luck tomorrow and be sure to let us know how it goes.
Thanks for fixing those mistakes TeacherGroupie and smalltowngal! I appreciate it! I just came home from getting construction paper and found shapes to use for myself to model, guided practice so I don't need to cut all the shapes myself. I do still need to cut some smaller. I'll definitely be on here tomorrow to let everyone know how it went. Can't wait to be done. I'll post on 3rd grade forum since everything about this position I posted here. Also, do you think I should have a total of 10 pairs for students to categorize & glue down (5 congruent & 5 similar figures) and tell them to do at least 6 (do all if time permits) or require them to do all 10? Or, is 10 too many for them to sort, categorize, glue? I'm giving them about 15-20 mins. at most I think.
I think that would be a good time limit for them to get all 10 done especially if they are 3rd graders.
Thanks again smalltowngirl! Now I can't wait to get this lesson done and over with. Still got a few more things to do. Burning the midnight oil so to speak at 10:35PM. Lol!
Hi Everyone! So I taught my lesson this morning, and it went well for the most part. I thought the lesson was quite simple for the students to understand. If I were to do this lesson again, I could challenge them a bit more. It also went longer than expected b/c I had so much packed in - 15-20 mins. over (lasted about 1 hour)! Ooops! Later today, I was in a 2nd year teacher's who I know previously through daily subbing and she said that when she was in the office, she heard the teacher who observed me (and maternity LTS position is for) talking to principal saying she liked my lesson. I also heard 3 candidates are vying for the position, one being a friend of mine. So, I hope I get it, although that still means I have to apply for another position for the fall as this isn't a permanent position. I later went in to that clasroom (as support) and taught a health lesson. It went really well! Surprisingly, I love that class, and I am more fond of K and first grade. We'll see what happens, but I'm glad it went well, and that it is over!
I'm glad to hear that everything went well. Did they let you know when you would hear about the position?
Yes, the principal said they have one more candidate who's interviewing (but I think probably teach a lesson) and then they said by the end of the week I'll hear back. Keeping fingers crossed...if only this was a permanent position. However, I like the teacher and the class so I'd take it if I got the position. Haven't had much experience in 3rd grade so it'd be great experience (even though I feel like I have so many experiences that are not permanent).
Well, you never know. They might see what a great job you are doing in this position, and offer you a full time position for next school year.
You never know is right, although the district is notorious for not hiring LTSubs. I was one last year and wasn't hired.
