timsterino, could I trouble you to post these links in the Multiple Subject Tests subforum, and specifically in the "Useful Web sites" thread at the top of the subforum?
Hello, I am new to this site. I found it today since I have become very discouraged. I haven't passed the FTCE k-6 exam. I am embarrassed to admit just how many times I have taken it. Sometimes I think it is just better to go into something else. But.... I will take it again and prepare more in hopes of me passing it this time. Any help is appreciated from anyone who can understand and help me in finally passing this test and moving on so I can do my internship.
Hello I'm not sure if this a recent post. If so please reply, I may have something to help you. I have taken this exam and passed.
Please contact me if you require help with this test, there are a few things that I used to prepare, and passed.
Thanks for replying Brittney. I have yet to schedule a test date. I'm still preparing, but would like to take it in April/May time frame. I'm kind of scared about taking it because of so many posts on failing - but I know that I need to take it soon. Thanks again for responding and I will do the google search as you stated!
Tim - is this the only resource you used? or did you use anything else? Thanks for sharing your resources!
Recommendations? Hi all... I was hoping for some feedback if possible. I am thinking about making a career change into education. I have always wanted to teach but there were always such a lack of jobs I went with the more secure one. I have a BS in business and have certificate of eligibility for temp. certification for 6-12 grade business classes. I recently was thinking about maybe trying for my k-6 certification. My question is how hard is it going to be for me to pass this test with no degree in education? I have looked over some broad questions and I do alright. I know I am going to have to study alot. I was planning on studying now until the end of April then attempting the test. Is that too much of a rush? Any input would help alot. Thanks.:thumb:
Unless FTCE K-6 is radically different from other states' elementary-ed subject-matter exams, it's much more about the content than it is about teaching practice. You should do fine. If you want to get a start on the technical terms of education, you could do worse than to Google "education glossary"; there's a pretty good glossary at http://glossary.plasmalink.com/glossary.html that will give you terms to look up on the Internet. Florida also has a fine Web site on reading instruction at http://www.fcrr.org.
Hi all. I am thinking about taking the K-6 Exam as well and had a very hard time with the GK Math. It took me three times to pass it. I already have my Prof Cert in Drama, but can't handle all the hours anymore. Any suggestions?
Paquel Hi, I am trying to email you, but it says your mailbox is full and won't accept any new emails... HELP! LOL
Well, I'm schedule to take the FTCE K-6 SAE next Friday (July 2nd). I still reviewing and hoping the History and Science will sink in SOON! It's hard not knowing exactly what I should know - such as dates etc. I have been finding quizzes online and practicing with those just to get extra practice. I kept taking the sample tests in the materials I have been using to study but after awhile you start memorizing the questions. Anyone taken the test lately and passed?
I PASSED!!! I took my exam this morning and happy to post that I passed!!! I'm so relieved! All I can say is use all of your resources, study teaching techniques, assessment etc. It's hard to say what exactly will be on your test - so studying everything will be beneficial! I wish everyone good luck!
Congrats, I have had it easy as far as General Knowledge Exams (all parts) and the FTCE Professional Education Test because I bought THE BEST study guide/notes everrr...no regrets! But cannot for the life of me understand why I did not pass the English 6-12 Subject Area exam!!!! HELLLPPPPP......
TestFairy...Where in South Florida are you. If you're in the Homestead area, or can get there easily, I can give you the names of some people who can help.
I am looking to take the test soon in either the ESE or elementary K - 6. Can you let me know what study guides you found most useful? Thanks!
Hi Brittany, Did you pass the exam after all. I am having some struggles passing. And wanted to know if you still need a study partner or even possibly of you do some tutoring. Thanks, LG
I will say my struggles are: Social Science and Science. I really hope to find a tutor or something or the best tips on how to pass. Thanks LG
Tests that are designed for particular states tend to be aligned to the state's content standards This page (http://www.floridastandards.org/) links to standards, some of them newly adopted, in science and in social studies. Have a look at the science standards. Then you might want to look for a really engaging kids' book or Web site that deals with those issues - you want something aimed at a middle school or high school student, with lots of visuals to illustrate the terminology you need. Finally, spend time every day finding (and naming) scientific principles at work in your everyday life. (Walking across a room is physical science in action: think about it.) For social studies, start with the state standards and then look for good kids' Web sites - or you could look for lesson plans, either for Florida schools or for other states' schools, with engaging activities that will help you get a grip on history and civics. The Web site of the Library of Congress can be helpful here: with the Florida standards handy, try browsing some of the collections at http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/browse/.
Study guides Hi, I just took my k-6 sae and did not pass for the second time. I am currently doing my last internship and graduate in May, I just registered for it again but I need a better guide to study from. The one I used was cliffnotes and didn't help me much, I felt like all the content on the test was different than what I had studied for. Any suggestions on which study guide to use??
Yes but not for a few weeks, even then that only gives you an overall score and not broken down by sections.
Assuming the usual array of domains, then: For math, any good skills review should be good; I like LearningExpress's books such as Practical Math Success in 20 Minutes a Day. For history, a good historical atlas is a fine choice, since it'll help you see the history; a good kids' history encyclopedia can also be very useful, and Kingfisher's is very good.
Hello everyone, I am relatively new to the site, and I'm scheduled to take the FTCE Elementary K-6 Exam at the end of next month. I am a career changer, currently working in administration at a university, and hold a bachelor's degree in Business, and a Master's degree in Liberal Studies. I already have the XAM Book, and I am currently studying from the (Elementary K-6) Module from the Florida Department of Education. I need to ensure that I pass on the first go, as I cannot really afford to pay $200. Does anyone have any other suggestions as far as study materials go? I will greatly appreciate any assistance that anyone can provide. Thanks! Gigi
Welcome to A to Z, GISELAD. Are the materials you're using so far teaching you a great deal you didn't know before? Of the domains that the test covers, which have you most nervous? Are you generally good as a test taker?
Good afternoon TeacherGroupie, Yes, the materials are definitely teaching me things I either didn't know or just did not recall. I just want to ensure that I am studying the correct material and not filling my brain up with unnecessary material. I am most nervous about the Math and Science areas, although the Language Arts is now beginning to worry me (this is suppose to be my strength). My biggest concern is that I have never been a good test taker. I retain answers, but apply them to incorrect questions/scenarios. Any valuable suggestions?? Thank you!
The Competencies (sorry I don't have the link handy) lay out what is and isn't tested. If a bit of information isn't positively excluded by the Competencies, there's nothing wrong with learning it - and the trick is to think less in terms of avoiding material you don't need and more in terms of how things you know and are learning can be used to help you reason out an answer. Here's a use for practice tests you've already been through: pick a question in science. If the question sets up a scenario without naming it, write down the name of the scenario by the question stem; if the question names a phenomenon, jot down an example of it from a book you have or from the Internet, and then jot down another example - of it playing out in your own life. (The rock cycle, for example, can be partially modeled by what happens to the leftover apple pie in the Tupperware in one's fridge when someone leaves the two-pound slab of mozzarella cheese on top of it: what part of the pie gets most mooshed?) Do likewise with the possible answers. Then think about what the notes you've just made suggest about what the correct answer must be.
