After reading everyone of these posts, I am now scared. I take the test this coming Monday July 16th. I already have my Prek-3 certification but in order to get into a school just minutes away from my house, I need to pass the K-6 because they are a project child school and the position open is 3-5.. which makes me currently unqualified without passing this test Monday. I just found out today, so that only gives me 5 days to cram. Someone please email me the basics of what I should study, so I am not wasting my time with all these links, study guides and such PLEASE!!!

You can email me at tammieearhart on hotmail

    THANKS IN ADVANCE

I have interest in teaching K-6. I got my degree in psychology; consequently, nothing of the courses or very little actually applies to the Florida eligibility for teaching K-6 (it does apply indirectly to methods of teaching mostly class management and developmentally appropriate stuff but that is another story). I have passed mathematics 5-9 FTCE test. I had enough mathematics in college (18+) to get the letter of eligibility for temporary and professional certification. After that, I have decided to teach younger children. I wonder if pass K-6 test which I belive will take a lot of effort on my part as well as frustration and searching for textbooks (if there are any), will I be eligible at least temporary to teach K-6 or I need to take education classes first (30 credits) to be considered for eligibility (statement sent by fldoe)? In short, is it enough to pass K-6 test after your B.A. (other than education degree) in order to be eligible for certification?

Reading your post I felt as if some else posted my thoughts. I am trying to pass the K-6 exam myself and have not reached it 3 times now. I missed it the last time by 3 points. I wanted to cry because like you, this test is what is keeping me from getting in the door of the school. I understand as a educator we need to be able to understand and help students but this test is holding back many of us. Several of my friends are teaching already and they keep pushing me to keep going for it and I will get there. I have started making little flashcards to help me. I wish someone would produce flashcards for us to use to study just information that is covered on the tests. Anyway, that is what I am going and doing now. I know what to expect from the test in a way, but just getting the correct answers is a problem for me. I wish you the best and you are not alone.

    ucitelj,
Yes. If you have a undergrad degree (in anything) and pass the FTCE K-6, you can obtain a certificate of eligibility. The FL DOE will also tell you what additional courses you need but you will be eligible to be hired to teach K-6.

Community colleges in Florida that have EPI program (education preparation institute) may offer preparation for FTCE K-6. I live in northeast Florida and my community college offers this course. It is a short course (5 days x 4 hours), but according to some of my classmates from EPI program helpful to them. You do not need to be enrolled into EPI program.

    Percent to Pass

I am signed up to take the k-6 test, and am worried about passing rates. I took the media specialist, and passed, even though I didnt feel I answered anything right! Does anyone know the percentage of questions you must get right to pass? Doing the practice tests, I have about a 73%, PLEASE HELP!

Percentage required to pass is an inexact science with most teacher tests, because it's very hard to write two questions that are exactly equivalent in difficulty and so the algorithms that translate raw scores into scaled scores usually contain fudge factors for each of the questions. But 73% should be pretty close for most teacher tests.

Hi I'm also new to this forum and I have a quick question. I just took the subject area exam k-6 and did not pass. Does anybody know what the passing score is? Thank you!

You can find an approximate passing percentage here: http://www.fldoe.org/asp/ftce/pdf/percentpass.pdf.

But, Floridians, help this poor bewildered Californian, please: where do you go to find out the structure of the test? Do you really have to pay for a test guide to get that information? I'm not finding that information on http://fl.nesinc.com - and it's the only teacher-test Web site run by NES that I know of that doesn't have test guides that explain the test structure and give sample questions - for free.

Yes, you have to pay $5 for the test guide, although my college gave us a few guides (the Professional Educators test guide and the El. Ed. K-6 guide). However, I bought the English 6 - 12 guide with my own $$$$$. I agree, it is odd that there are no free test guides or sample questions, as many tests have "mock up" versions you can look at for free, online. The guide usually contains a "breakdown" of the test (what percentage focuses on math, science, etc.) but it in no way is truly indicative of what to expect on the test. I feel as if a lot of the FTCE exams are pretty random...

I took this test. I ordered a study guide from the library. I found the most difficult part for me to be the social studies section.

Yes, it is quite annoying to shell out $$$$$ for the slim guide. Eh, hopefully when I am done taking these tests, it will all pay off...

On the other hand, if the guide's any good, $5 is pretty cheap.

ecteacher, I trust the guide contains and even expands on the Competencies on the fldoe Web site. Am I correct that you're working on English 6-12 now? If so, have you tried checking out any of the resources listed hereabouts for CSET English in areas that the Competencies cover?

Right now I am working on the FTCE K - 6 Exam, as of right now I have yet to look at the book though. I am being a bit lazy, right now I am also doing my final internship and I am pretty busy with a lot of different stuff. I am sure the book will help a little, I am taking that one April 19th...

    Recommendation

I took the k-6 test almost a year ago and passed, may I suggest the Elementary k-6 book at Borders with the CD rom with practice test. It was the only thing that helped me. Good luck and you'll want to celebrate when you do pass. Oh by the way it's 60% you must pass with, or 200 pts.

    FTCE K-6

Thank you! I received a score of 190 on my exam, but now I know that I need to pass it with a 200. Too bad they don't tell you which part of the exam you did bad. I plan on taking my exam again in the end of March. There are so many books out there that you can study from. How do you know which one will help you out the best?

There's no such thing as The One Right Book For Everyone. Take some time, if possible, to leaf through the possibilities - you're looking for something that suits your learning style and does well at filling the gaps in your knowledge.

Hello nicimik I am also a newcomer to this website and I came across your post about additional questions towards the test and also about a class that is supposed to be at UCF. If you could send me this information I would really appreciate it. I am taking the test this month.

Help on the FTCE K-6 Exam

I too have taken this exam twice and nothing i don't know what I passing score is so I don't even know how far off I am. I have yet to find any study guide that helps i have bought three and nothing. I improved my score but that still was not enough to pass this exam. I can't believe that after graduating with my Bachelor's in ESE now they are making me take this test to teach in a high school or i won't get a job after i have been recruited 300+ miles from what was home....I am desperate..and need help does anyone care to compare notes and see if we can help eachother pass this test. I remember some stuff on it I am sure we can get answers together.
Why put teacher's through this agony for our miserable paychecks.
Hope to hear back from some one soon I am due to take the exam in two weeks to see if i pass on my third try!!!

Hey there - I think if u look at the topics that r on the DOE website and google them up and read about them - it may help.
I used the XAm book - however - I don't know if that was really helpful. It seemed like a lot of the questions were from the stuff that I had googled. Hope this helps.

I passed the Elementary Education K-6 test my first try and from reading these posts I was really scared to take the test because I thought it was going to be the hardest, most evil test possible, used to weed out future teachers but it really wasn't bad at all. I will agree that you have no idea if you are doing good or bad while you're taking it. The social studies part was a bunch of guessing for me because I'm into history and it asks for specific facts about battles and checks and balances etc. The science was easy only because I studied from the REA k-6 study guide by anita davis. It asked about atoms and hypothesis, etc the language arts section was a little more theory/names of teaching strategies than I expected after reading these forums. Good luck, I know if I had failed, I will be singing a different tune but study and you should be fine. Try, try again, and good things will come.

I am currently teaching Kindergarten and am looking for completion of my FL teaching cert. Any ideas as to what might really help me? I have every study guide out there and am not finding that they are helping! Please HELP!!!

    Hello all,
Just like so many others, I am new to this site. I have taken the FLorida ESE FTCE and now I need the K-6 Elementary Ed. I will go to the library tomorrow, but I don't know if they will have what I need. Where should I turn first? It would be great to download something to get started studying. I am a little bit intimidated by all the talk about failing this test a number of times. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I just took my ESE exam today, so I am eager to get busy. tks

Sorry I didn't get to this, testtime. FTCE exams are a little bit unusual, but my recollection is that a time is allotted for the entire test. I could be wrong, though - and if I am, please correct me.

I took the exam today and thought I would do well, as I have been studying diligently for two weeks. However, after taking it I honestly don't think I passed. In fact, I'm quite sure I didn't. It felt increasingly difficult.
Does it really take 4 weeks to get the results? I took the computer based test and had heard you get the "Pass" or "Not Pass" at the end of the test, but I didn't.

If I failed, I haven't a clue what I could do differently. I bought the X-AM FTCE study guide from Barnes and Noble, I visited this forum to see what people were saying and printed out necessary link information, I made flash cards, I did all of the practice exam/study guides from the education website. I am at a loss.

I feel like they are trying to get people to fail just so they can make more money. $200 isn't cheap! And to have to be $170 for a second time is craziness!

    Studying and test

I am so nervous. I take the Elementary Education k-6 FTCE subject test on Friday. I have been studying daily with the FTCE Elementary Education study guide. I read through all chapters, then made note cards for each item I need to remember. I hope this works. I am not an education major, but I would love to teach. This forum really makes me nervous that it is going to be a VERY hard test! I will let you know how I do!!

Nothing appeared on the screen to show you passed or failed for the computer test? YIKES! I do not like waiting to find out if I passed or not...

Nope, nothing! I was told that it would. They did away with that.
Additionally, I don't know if you read anything about there being an essay portion? I did and was looking forward to that part of the test because I'm good at writing essays.

The lady at the testing center told me they did away with the essay portion. :(

Guess I'm just going to start studying again for the next time since you have 31 days before you can take it again, and I'm fairly sure I'll have to redo it. :(
