    I need a cute fall poem that lends itself to illustrration. my class has been asked to do some fall drawings to be used as decorations for a meeting. I'd like to use a poem for inspiration & will print it on the paper....will probably use it in my poetry centr this week too. Any suggestions?

    Autumn, Queen of Year
    by Winifred Sackville Stoner, Jr.

    When the pumpkins are so yellow
    And the vines with grapes abound,
    When the melons are so mellow
    And the nuts fall to the ground;
    When persimmons lose their bitters,
    And the apples are so red;
    When we love to eat corn fritters
    Since the roasting ears have fled;
    When vacation days are over
    And the children go to school,
    They no longer play in clover,
    But much learn "Arithmos-rule,"
    When weird Hallowe'en's most naughty elves
    With gnomes and sprites appear,
    While fat Thanksgiving fills the shelves -
    'Tis AUTUMN, QUEEN OF YEAR.

    Thanksgiving Time
    by Author Unknown

    When all the leaves are off the boughs,
    And nuts and apples gathered in,
    And cornstalks waiting for the cows,
    And pumpkins safe in barn and bin,
    Then Mother says, "My children dear,
    The fields are brown, and autumn flies;
    Thanksgiving Day is very near,
    And we must make thanksgiving pies!"

    Thanksgiving Comes But Once a Year
    by Thornton W. Burgess

    Thanksgiving comes but once a year,
    But when it comes it brings good cheer.
    For in my storehouse on this day
    Are piles of good things hid away.
    Each day I've worked from early morn
    To gather acorns, nuts, and corn,
    Till now I've plenty and to spare
    Without a worry or a care.
    So light of heart the whole day long,
    I'll sing a glad Thanksgiving song."

    Come Little Leaves

    COME LITTLE LEAVES
    by George Cooper

    "Come, little leaves" said the wind one day,
    "Come over the meadows with me, and play;
    Put on your dresses of red and gold;
    Summer is gone, and the days grow cold."

    Soon as the leaves heard the wind's loud call,
    Down they came fluttering, one and all;
    Over the brown fields they danced and flew,
    Singing the soft little songs they knew.

    Dancing and whirling the little leaves went;
    Winter had called them and they were content-
    Soon fast asleep in their earthly beds,
    The snow laid a soft mantle over their heads.

    Check out Everyday's a Holiday by Dean Koontz. He has funny poems for all seasons and holidays! My students loved them!

    What will you have them do with the poem in your poetry center?

    Way up high in the apple tree,
    two little apples smiled at me.
    I shook that tree as hard as I could,
    down came the apples,
    mmm...they were good!

    He also wrote a children's book called "santa's bad twin" I think....My kids love it I keep it packed with the Christmas decorations, so I can't check the title, but we read it every Christmas Eve, It also has a sorta "Where's Waldo" thing with the snowmen in the illustrations.

    Whether the weather be good,
    or whether the weather be not,
    We'll weather the weather,
    Whether we like it or not.

    I think that whether on the third line should actually be weather.

    Otherwise, I like that one :)

    In my defense, it was late and I was relying on my feeble memory after a loooong day...

    Noted and corrected!!!:thanks:

    We sing this one to Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star but it is a poem.

    Pumpkin, Pumpkin

    Pumpkin, pumpkin on the ground,
    How'd you get so big and round?
    Once you were a seed so small,
    Now you are a great big ball.
    Pumpkin, pumpkin on the ground,
    How'd you get so big and round?
