Hi there, I am going back to college and would like to become an elementary teacher. I've really enjoyed volunteering at my son's school and feel that it is what I'd really like to do. My only question is that my Husband publishes an adult magazine with content like Playboy. Is there any reason that this might hinder me getting a job teaching? It doesn't matter to those I volunteer with, but I just wanted to ask current teachers what they think. I was too shy to ask my son's teachers. Thanks for any advice offered.

I don't know how anyone would ever know, and doubt penalizing you for what your husband does would be legal. Even if someone figured out you had the same last name as the publisher, that would not be a question they would be allowed to ask in an interview. As long as you don't have convictions for anything, even he would pass a background check. They only search criminal data banks.

I don't see how anyone would even make the connection between your husband's job and yours. Even if they did, it shouldn't have any impact. Lots of people in Vegas, even teachers, have ties to the adult entertainment industry. I really don't think it should be a problem for you unless you go around blabbing about it and making people question your judgment.

It could certainly be an issue here.

But could they legally do anything about it? I doubt it.

They could not hire you. Once hired, I'm not sure they could do anything about it.

They wouldn't need to do anything legally about it...just not hire her.

I'm pretty sure that would even cause a stir in oh-so-liberal Portland, Or.

How would h.r. ever know unless she is a very public wife of a very public person? She would just be one more name on an application that gets sorted and vetted. They look for proper credentials. They look for college records. They look for experience. They look for criminal records. If she has those and good references nothing would put up a red flag. The application would sail on through like everyone else's. No public school district has the resources to do complete background checks.

She has a right to work like everyone else. What her husband does has nothing to do with what goes on in her classroom. Her husband has a legal business.

I live in a small town. The application process you described isn't exactly how it happens here.

...and let's not forget that in most cases nontenured can be let go at will. The community gets wind and in an uproar over something like this? I wouldn't put too much money on the teacher staying around too long...Given this was a first post by a new member (who hasn't been back), I'm taking this all with a grain of salt anyway.

It probably depends on your community. Legally, it shouldn't matter wherever you go, but we all know how these things go. Are you planning to work in the community where you currently live? If so, what are people's attitudes to that sort of thing there?
